About this listen

Would you listen to The Rings of Haven again? Why?

i would listen to this again because although the story is easy to follow, there is so much depth to the story some of the details may be missed.

just what i want from a sci-fi series

It’s a short book at a handful of hours. The story starts slow, remains slow and uninteresting until the last few chapters when it gets much better. About 3/4 of the way through I gave up, listened to a different book before returning. I found the narrator irritating and almost robotic in sound.

Saved by the ending

As with Book 1, Aurora, this is a pleasant to listen to soap opera that glides through space, as long as you do not expect too much.

An easy romp through space

The first novel ended at a fairly logical point but this one feels like they reached an end of a chapter and said that's enough for now. In fact I have just finished the third book and it really feels like it was cut into two pieces. This also feels true with the comparatively short running times of both novels.

Having said that it is the continuation of the struggles of our intrepid band of voyagers trying to get home. And is a pleasant listen with action that keeps you interested and characters you want to learn more about. Some of the plotting is over broad and you can see events coming well in advance but the author has been able to put in a few twists and surprises to keep it interesting. The main thing is that the story moves along and is not full of filler or verbal excesses.

Other than being half a novel this I recommend this one.

A much shorter second book than expected the story expands further but the storytelling and dialogue switches from good in places to something like an Encyclopedia recitation in most of the book. The story is punctuated with background explanations whenever the author realise that there was no context to the current plot . It’s not helped by the narrator he seems to find it hard to inject much excitement into even the most action pack of scenes. I’ll try the third book to see if this improves.

A very short second book

the captain is an idot that needs basic things explained to him by his female officers ..nothing new there now days..the whole point of the story is finding a way back to earth..an yet they all ready have a way since book one..it states it only takes a few hours to power the jump drive to full an we can jump 10 lightyears ..they are 100 lightyears from earth..so instead of stocking up on food an meds an then starting the jumps home...he puts the ship in danger gets involved in a war an plans to get a power source from a hostile home world so he can jump the ship back to earth in a single jump...a power source they dont even know they can use...and as you know earth is in danger with out the return of the ship.an yet he puts it in danger instead of going right back to earth....an last point..this new jump drive has to be back due to the fact they wipe any evidnce on earth that it existed no files no back ups an the only people that know about are on the ship along with the dats about the drive..an of course nothing can go wrong with that idea..the logic of the plot is just so flawed it is like it has been written by a young adult for school work

What did you like best about The Rings of Haven? What did you like least?

Least: well too short, I get the impression that this guy is ripping readers off by having a short book for the same price and the story line is very weak, do some shopping in a supermarket then go to the farm to buy in bulk. Buy the series but this one is short to make money for an author who couldn't be bothered to write a good story. Not impressed.

Just a very weak storyline and really there were many times when the story was repeated. I think he ran out of ideas and wanted to produce a series of books to make lots of money. Disappointed.

A very short installment that only serves to bridge the first book (which establishes characters, setting, etc) with what I hope is a more engaging third book.

It was pleasant enough to listen to, but I wouldn't have missed any thing from reading a 1000 word summary.
The first book held up much better as a stand alone story, even if the ending is a complete tease.

The narrator isn't great; his natural accent is very noticeable in all characters. Given that most of the characters are meant to be from different places with different accents it detracts from the immersion to have them all sound like they grew up on the same block. Except for the cliché Russian accent; that sounds... different.

Pretty good, but feels like filler material.
