About this listen

From number-one New York Times best-selling author Brandon Sanderson: his debut novel for the young adult audience.

More than anything, Joel wants to be a Rithmatist. Chosen by the Master in a mysterious inception ceremony, Rithmatists have the power to infuse life into two-dimensional figures known as Chalklings. Rithmatists are humanity’s only defense against the Wild Chalklings - merciless creatures that leave mangled corpses in their wake. Having nearly overrun the territory of Nebrask, the Wild Chalklings now threaten all of the American Isles.

As the son of a lowly chalkmaker at Armedius Academy, Joel can only watch as Rithmatist students study the magical art that he would do anything to practice. Then students start disappearing; kidnapped from their rooms at night, leaving trails of blood. Assigned to help the professor who is investigating the crimes, Joel and his friend Melody find themselves on the trail of an unexpected discovery - one that will change Rithmatics, and their world, forever.

Best-selling author Brandon Sanderson brings his unique brand of epic storytelling to the teen audience with an engrossing tale of danger and suspense. With his trademark skills in world-building, Sanderson has created a magic system that is so inventive and detailed that listeners who appreciate games of strategy and tactics just may want to bring Rithmatics to life in our world.

Brandon Sanderson was born in Nebraska in 1975. Since his first novel, the acclaimed Elantris, Sanderson has written the Mistborn series, the stand-alone novel Warbreaker and has become a New York Times best-selling author, hailed as the natural successor to Robert Jordan. Indeed, Sanderson was chosen by the Jordan estate to complete the Wheel of Time sequence following Jordan's death.

Critic reviews

"The Rithmatist, while it’s definitely as clear and exciting as a YA novel should be, is every bit as deep and richly invented as the best of Sanderson’s adult novels…. Sanderson at his best, for adults and young readers alike." (Orson Scott Card, New York Times best-selling author of Ender’s Game)
"Brandon Sanderson has created an ingenious new martial art where the chalk is mightier than the sword. In his alternative, dangerous version of the world, brave young soldiers must battle back dark forces armed with the nerves of a warrior and the skills of an artist. It’s a fun read with a unique take on fighting where if you can’t draw…you die." (D.J. MacHale, New York Times best-selling author of Pendragon and SYLO)
"There are very few authors about whom I can say, without a doubt, that I will read every single book they ever write. Brandon Sanderson is a member of that club. He’s brilliant and has an imagination I’ve only seen in the likes of Stephen King and J. K. Rowling." (James Dashner, New York Times best-selling author of The Maze Runner)

This is more YA than Sanderson’s epics but none the worse for that. It’s as gripping as it is inventive and wonderfully unique. I particularly liked the springwork creatures :) Highly recommended!

Fast paced fun

Gripping, amazing, had to sneak listening at work so I could finish it. Where is the next one?

Love, love, love. Where's the next????

I didn’t expect to enjoy this audio book as much as I did. I confess I don’t usually listen to American narrators but Michael Kramer has a rich but soft accent and differentiated his characters very well.
The storyline was unusual but gripping and I look forward to listening to the next in the series.

Surprisingly good

If you could sum up The Rithmatist in three words, what would they be?

Different, interesting, quirky.

Have you listened to any of Michael Kramer’s other performances? How does this one compare?

Yes and more of the same, I say the same because I have listened to well over 300 hours of his narrations and he has never given less than a brilliant performance, seldom equalled, never bettered.

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Made me laugh sometimes

Any additional comments?

About time too, chalk drawings are the bad guys, what a change from werewolves, vampires, elves, goblins etc etc. I think it's fun and the characters are great,

Brilliantly different

Once again, a new magical system. Combined with an alternative history this makes for a fast paced, exciting read.

another excellent book by Sanderson

A great narrative with dialogue and action that flows well, but to be honest I was a little disappointed with the world building, having read most of Sanderson’s books and having high expectations. The mixture of real world history and invented history was confusing, and it took me a while to visualize the world and culture. The spring works stuff was cool though, and I was fine with suspending my disbelief regarding the chalklings (which some reviewers have struggled with).
If you haven’t read much Sanderson, you may not have an issue with it at all, but after experiencing most of the worlds in the Cosmere, this one was a bit of a let down in that regard.
However, the story arc is great, and the characters wonderfully drawn (pun intended haha).

Good but diehard Sanderson fans may be disappointed

It’s a short one for a Sanderson, but still has a great plot, fun and lovable characters and (of course) a detailed and interesting setting

Simply Excellent

Fantastic! I wish it was longer! Engaging and fun for young adults and older readers alike. Not as complex as some of his other works, it is nonetheless entertaining and a refreshingly easy read.

Fantastic YA novel

Loved everything about this the reading of the portrayal of each character. One of the best things I've listened to in a long time.

Such a fantastic book

Wonderful premise and excellent story progression. I was enthralled from the beginning and found Joel & Melody to be great characters.
This was a great listen, well read/performed and a good pace throughout.

Brand new world view!
