About this listen

Brought to you by Penguin

The inspiration behind the BBC drama The Crimson Field.

'On the face of it,' writes Lyn Macdonald, 'no one could have been less equipped for the job than these gently nurtured girls who walked straight out of Edwardian drawing rooms into the manifest horrors of the First World War....'

Yet the volunteer nurses rose magnificently to the occasion. In leaking tents and draughty huts they fought another war, a war against agony and death, as men lay suffering from the pain of unimaginable wounds or diseases we can now cure almost instantly. It was here that young doctors frantically forged new medical techniques - of blood transfusion, dentistry, psychiatry and plastic surgery - in the attempt to save soldiers shattered in body or spirit. And it was here that women achieved a quiet but permanent revolution, by proving beyond question they could do anything. All this is superbly captured in The Roses of No Man's Land, a panorama of hardship, disillusion and despair, yet also of endurance and supreme courage.

Over the past 20 years Lyn Macdonald has established a popular reputation as an author and historian of the First World War. Her books are based on the accounts of eyewitnesses and survivors, told in their own words and cast a unique light on the First World War. Most are published by Penguin.

Critic reviews

"Lyn Macdonald writes splendidly and touchingly of the work of the nurses and doctors who fought their humanitarian battle on the Western Front." (Sunday Telegraph)

I’ve read all of Lyn McDonalds Great War book covering each year of the conflict. I’d never got round to reading this. My great uncle served as a pre war regular in the RAMC so I was keen to know more about the care of the wounded. This is a very moving yet inspirational book about some very dedicated, brave people. I cant recommend it highly enough. I really enjoyed it. The narration is 1st class. Please read it…

This is a wonderful book telling the story of the unsung heroes of WW1 the Nurses and VADs who cared for our soldiers. It will bring home how courageous these women were, often no more than 21 years old and from at times extremely privileged backgrounds. They had to face the horrors of treating men who had been maimed, traumatised or horribly disfigured by modern warfare. There bravery is beautifully told by Lynn McDonald writing and Alison Dowlings wonderful narration. Highly recommended and challenge you not to be incrediably moved by the stories of these brave soldiers and the Nurses and VADs who cared for them.

Fabulous book with the best narrator I’ve heard on audible.

This is the best narration of all audio books I have. Could listen to her for hours.

At one point I listened for over three hours. Brilliantly written.

The combination of the writing and narration means I will definitely read another Lynn McDonald book

A beautifully written account of the all medical personnel , thrown in to the horrors of the Great War. The extracts from the darires of the staff was very moving at times. I listened over just a few days and was sorry when it came to the end.
The narration could not have been bettered. Definitely a 5 star book. On to the next Lyn MacDonald book.

An emotional read that I finished in two days. Lyn Macdonald brings home the full horrors of the First World War told through the eyes of the young nurses pitched into unimaginable hell. The narration was excellent. I look forward to her next two books; Passchendaele and The Somme.

Brilliantly written with wonderful narration

Such a good book. Filled with so much pain and suffering the men must have went through and the administration by the Roses. Brave men and brave women. Can only imagine the conditions they were dealing with. No antibiotics or pain killers can’t imagine what it was like. This book brought home the horrors of WW1 to me and I’m never going to forget. Well narrated… worth every penny and I will listen to others by this author.
