About this listen

From the translator of the best-selling Poetic Edda comes a gripping new rendering of two of the greatest sagas of Old Norse literature.

Together the two sagas recount the story of seven generations of a single legendary heroic family and comprise our best source of traditional lore about its members - including, among others, the dragon slayer Sigurd, Brynhild the Valkyrie, and the Viking chieftain Ragnar Lothbrok.

academic but enjoyable

the extremely dry academic start took a while to get past but the stories themselves were very compelling, and the history expanded upon was helpful.

Great listen

Loved it. I found the Poetic Edda quite a dry listen, this in comparison was brilliant.
A great collection of stories and history

Fantastic Read!

Fantastic book and informative on the origins of the work. Albeit shorter than desired and leaves you wanting just a little more.

Detailed and excellent but slow and unenjoyable

I find this sort of thing fascinating. This somehow missed the mark in terms of delivering the content in a pleasureable way

Very good reading of two sagas

Good foreword explaining the various characters, and a nice narration follows. Recommended whether you have heard any of the sagas before or not.

Great voice, great story, mediocre execution.

I don’t think it’s much of an exaggeration to say Jackson has a great voice, deep, resounding, etc. However the story really deserves more emotion. Jackson isn’t a trained voice actor but honestly I enjoyed his going over the cliffnotes of the story more than his actual reading, as in his cliff notes version there much more life in his voice.

Very educational and a brilliant tale.

A very educational and enjoyable read, for any fans of the Vikings series or norse mythology you will absolutely love this. Beautifully translated by Jackson Crawford, Amazing story of heros still remembered over a thousand years later and warriors names are still be recalled to this day. This is only the second English translation of these two sagas to be published in one volume. Crawford's translation of both sagas reads fluently and engagingly. Reading this book has been, for me, a very enjoyable experience, since being an extra on the Vikings series, my love for old Norse mythology and legendary warriors has grown tenfold. This books contains generations of war, family feuds, magic, revenge, murder, the Legendary Ragnar Lothbrok, his sons and fantastic bloody battles. If you’re into Norse stories, you will really enjoy this, I very highly recommend..😁🔥⚔️🗡🪓

good ending

So, he killed him took his gold, she killed her took her gold, he then killed her took her gold, but she killed him, then her, and he then killed her, BUT he killed him first. Not to be put down, he killed him then him before she killed him... Then he killed her after she killed him....

anyway at the end everyone is dead and there is a big pile of gold. THE END

Was expecting a lot more.

Granted, its difficult to give a fair review for what are essentially some of the oldest stories ever written, so you can't really give them the same criticism you would a book released more recently. That being said, I didn't enjoy these. extremely repetitive in essence, and although I respect Jackson for stepping up to narrate, never an easy task, I cannot help but wonder what a professional narrator would've added to this. I just think these stories could've been told with a lot more spice and energy, which considering how every story is essentially the same tale over and over again doesn't help. The prose edda is leagues ahead of this, or just watch Vikings.
