Summary

Dive into this uniquely elegant exploration of the sea.

An exploration of marine life and the ocean environment, this audiobook makes marine biology and oceanography accessible and enjoyable. The Science of the Ocean offers up riches from every corner of the ocean, from coral reefs and mangrove swamps to icy fjords and deep-ocean trenches, and from great whales to the microscopic beauty of plankton. Along the way, it explains how the ocean itself works, including tides, currents, hurricanes, tsunamis and the global processes of oceanography and climate. An informative and utterly beautiful introduction to the ocean, this audiobook brings the wealth of the sea to your ears.

Maya Plass (consultant). A lifelong passion for natural history and the great outdoors led Maya to pursue a career in marine biology. After a BSc in marine biology and coastal ecology, followed by an MSc in integrated coastal zone management, Maya worked as a project officer as she developed sustainable coastal management projects, then set up her own marine education business - Learn to Sea. She is a regular guest presenter on the BBC's Springwatch, Autumnwatch, and Coast and is author of the RSPB Handbook of the Seashore (2013). She is patron of three marine conservation charities - Sea-changers, MARINElife and The Blue Mile.

Unlistenable

Well read and as always the information about the ocean is interesting but between the constant chapter headings and the changing between subjects, as an audiobook it does not work.one of the rare occasions when I have had to abandon a book after an hour, which is a shame because it was well read

Not effective as an audiobook

I abandoned this early on just because it wasn't really what I was expecting, in spite of listening to the sample in advance of purchasing. I see now that the paper version looks like a quick reference guide that is enhanced with a lot of photographs. Perhaps this style relies on that visual guide. Unfortunately this just doesn't work as an audiobook in my opinion. I was looking for something more in-depth and structured whereas this felt like a series of random, unlabelled flashcard facts (148 chapters in a 6hr40 book). I gave it a couple of stars just because I thought the narration was reasonable and there was the odd interesting fact from what I've heard.
