Similar in nature to ‚blood of the isles‘ the focus here is on Scotland as one would expect. Nonetheless the context to the history of settlement of Scotland expands into the areas of origin for the settlers of Scotland at the time as well as the geological, geographic, and historical circumstances they faced in Scotland. This makes a really good history of Scotland and includes a lot of fascinating details. Greatly narrated also turning this into an audible ‚page turner‘

The above quote written at the end of the book justifies this well written, well narrated and well researched book. I have to admit to being slightly confused by the ubiquitous use of mathematical formulas to explain our ancestral DNA markers, but found them easier to comprehend when they were explained in their historical context. I am always wary of employing small samples of regional DNA evidence to explain the history of local populations, but when it is employed with archaeological and written sources it can be useful and Moffat does this really well. For those interested in prehistory as well as history in a Scottish context I would thoroughly recommend this book.

The overuse of probably, might have been, it's possible, it was likely, all suggest that little evidential research was carried out and is largely based on the authors thoughts of what BC Scots could have been.
He fails to cite any experts who have studied the discoveries and make leaps to try to look into a culture he seems to have little idea about, especially the structure and norms.
I was really disappointed with this book.
