About this listen
Bhima, the unforgettable main character of Thrity Umrigar’s beloved national best seller, The Space Between Us, returns in this triumphant sequel - a poignant and compelling novel in which the former servant struggles against the circumstances of class and misfortune to forge a new path for herself and her granddaughter in modern India.
Poor and illiterate, Bhima had faithfully worked for the Dubash family, an upper-middle-class Parsi household, for more than 20 years. Yet after courageously speaking the truth about a heinous crime perpetrated against her own family, the devoted servant was cruelly fired. The sting of that dismissal was made more painful coming from Sera Dubash, the temperamental employer who had long been Bhima’s only confidante. A woman who has endured despair and loss with stoicism, Bhima must now find some other way to support herself and her granddaughter, Maya.
Bhima’s fortunes take an unexpected turn when her path intersects with Parvati, a bitter, taciturn older woman. The two acquaintances soon form a tentative business partnership, selling fruits and vegetables at the local market. As they work together, these two women seemingly bound by fate grow closer, each confessing the truth about their lives and the wounds that haunt them. Discovering her first true friend, Bhima pieces together a new life, and together, the two women learn to stand on their own.
A dazzling story of gender, strength, friendship, and second chances, The Secrets Between Us is a powerful and perceptive novel that brilliantly evokes the complexities of life in modern India and the harsh realities faced by women born without privilege as they struggle to survive.

Beautifully narrated, thoughtful story of very poor women of India as main characters. Very relatable feelings and emotions. Keeps you glued till the end.

Moving but slightly harrowing story
I thoroughly enjoyed the audiobook as the narrator had a very soothing voice which made easy listening. I found the story very graphic which in places was quite shocking, but I was compelled to continue. Sad but also happy, and interesting to hear some of the clashes of life in India. I would recommend as an audiobook

Tragically sad and lovingly, beautifully told.
The misery of the lives of poor people existing rather than living from day to day in Mumbai is beautifully read. I loved this book.

The story is captivating and characters so beautifully presented and narrated with a emotive tone. I couldn't stop listening. Bhima, Minard and Parwati became my friends by the end of this story.

So beautiful I didn’t want it to end.
This was another delightful book by Thrity Umrigar and the narrator was perfect too, which added to the enjoyment. Bhima continues her journey in this sequel to The Space Between Us, which I highly recommend you read first. This is not just a book of words, the author paints the story so clearly you are there, in that hovel, struggling to bring bread to the table , seeing the pain and feeling her pride.
I have also read Everybody’s Son, which was wonderful.

wow
Never have i ever gotten so invested in a character.. the trials of Bhima's life and how she has to overcome the belief systems that change through the generations.. the changes that one person can make on anothers life.. as I was listening to the story I could imagine the surroundings as if I was really there.. Thrity Umrigar writes with such love for her characters.. her past. loved it !
