About this listen

Funny, heartwarming and ultimately triumphant, The Seven Imperfect Rules of Elvira Carr is the perfect story for anyone who doesn't quite fit in - and for everyone who chooses not to.

Elvira Carr is 27 and neuro-atypical. Her father - whom she suspects was in the secret service - has passed away, and, after several Unfortunate Incidents growing up, she now spends most of her time at home with her overbearing mother. But when her mother has a stroke and is taken into care, Elvira is suddenly forced to look after herself or risk ending up in sheltered accommodation.

Armed with her Seven Rules, which she puts together after online research, Elvira hopes to learn how to navigate a world that's full of people she doesn't understand. Not even the Seven Rules can help her, however, when she discovers that everything she thought she knew about her father was a lie, and she is faced with solving a mystery she didn't even know existed.

I had recently listened to Eleanor Oliphant is absolutely fine and thoroughly enjoyed it and saw a comment suggesting if you’d like EO, you should try The Seven imperfect Rules. I have binge listened to this book I enjoyed it so much. The narration fitted the story perfectly and I would absolutely recommend it.

Absolutely brilliant

If you loved Eleanor Oliphant, you will probably love Elvira Carr. Like The Curious Case Of The Dog In The Night Time, this is narrated by an unexpected heroine, who perceives the world from an unusual angle.
Elvira loves animals, biscuits and Mills and Boon books and has led a sheltered life. This book follows her as she learns about the wider world. I wanted to cheer her on and give her an extra-special box of biscuits.
Beautifully read, as well. Elvira came alive for me.
Highly recommended.

Elvira is a quirky heroine you will want to cheer

Liked it. Nice sweet story of Ellie. Found the book a little repetitive at times and it lacked excitement, with the exception of a bit of subplot when Ellie makes her big mistake.

Nice story

I really enjoyed Elvira’s story and found it sad, funny and enlightening. Her ‘condition’ is never named, but one assumes to be Autism/Asberger’s and the book is written from her viewpoint. Her 7 Rules help her cope with life when she is left alone to manage her own life after 27 years of her mother doing it for her.
The narrator’s voice sounds much younger than the 27 year old she is portraying but her delivery and intonation was lovely and made the story feel ’real’

Loved this book!

Her life was always controlled by her mum until her mother died,
left by herself and often judged by others Elvira Carr starts on her own journey to try to fit in with other people.
she embarks to conform to the people around her.
she struggles with daily life and can not understand jokes of figure of speech, but eventually she proves that with a lot of work she can lead a life of sorts.

A young woman with asergers

Sad, insightful, heartwarming, funny. Elvira who has special needs goes on a journey of discovery when her domineering mother falls ill and has to go into care. It is a rollercoaster ride for her, but she proves with the right support you can thrive. Her late father who she adored had many secrets which unfold gradually.
Beautifully narrated I definitely recommend this book

Just finished this wonderful book! It's beautifully written, moved me to tears in places and often made me laugh out loud. We don't find out what condition Elvira has but I really enjoyed her journey and reading about her development.
