About this listen
She is convinced it must be Cilla, but how can it be? To solve the mystery of her benefactor Margaret must go back in her memories almost 70 years, to the time when she was 'vanished' to a long-stay institution for children with learning disabilities.
An absorbing and page-turning mystery with a dual timeline, The Vanishing of Margaret Small takes readers into a fascinating past, and introduces an unforgettable literary heroine.

Exemplary narration took this to another level
From the moment I listened to the sample I was hooked.
Annie Aldington is exemplary as the voice of Margaret. I really looked forward to putting in my ears and listen to this lovely if at times heartbreakingly sad story unfold.
This is a debut novel inspired by the authors work with Mencap, It highlights the plight of some of the people who had been put into long term institutions as children, who really should not have been put there in the first place.
Great story and exemplary narration, I highly recommend this book.

Moving and tender
A pleasure to read. This book was a mixture of bitter sweet moments. The main character is a total innocent.you are taken on a journey of her life experiences which provides the listener with a historical insight of living in a state run institution and the social attitudes of its times.A humble reminder of the lack of liberty many individuals had to endure. It makes you think about how as a society it is all to common it is to overlook vulnerable people in our everyday often busy lives. A reminder perhaps to exchange a few kind words and really see the individual who is often overlooked in our every day encounters.

Absolutely BRILLIANT! don’t hesitate to listen to this
I have worked with adults with learning disabilities for 30 years and have advocated for the rights of the people I have had the privilege to support. Listening to this book made me realise that I have never completely understood them till now! The narration is superb and the writing inspiring, I will recommend this book to everyone I know, thank you to everyone involved in bringing this book to us 😊

Could not stop listening
This was a brutal at times yet heartwarming story. The narrator had such a lovely tone and the story flowed easily. It’s dreadful to think that this was a reality for too many people in the not so distant past and thankfully thinking around unmarried mothers forced adoptions and the disabled has moved on but still has a way to go

Loved this book. Hard to believe how cruel we were to children and unmarried mothers at that time. Sometimes the story was heartbreaking but it was beautifully read and oh how I wanted to hug Margaret. One of the best books I have ever listened to.

Vanishing of Margaret Small
An eye opening account of societies values and institutions during the 40-70s
A sad reflection of the poor treatment of some of society’s most vulnerable and the opinions of the time
thankfully we have learned from accounts and memoirs like these. Beautifully written.
