About this listen
THE NUMBER ONE BESTSELLER A heartbreaking read of loss and hope from Laura Pearson
The list he left had just one item on it. Or, at least, it did at first…
Mabel Beaumont’s husband Arthur loved lists. He’d leave them for her everywhere. ‘Remember: eggs, butter, sugar’. ‘I love you: today, tomorrow, always’.
But now Arthur is gone. He died: softly, gently, not making a fuss. But he’s still left her a list. This one has just one item on it though: ‘Find D’.
Mabel feels sure she knows what it means. She must track down her best friend Dot, who she hasn’t seen since the fateful day she left more than sixty years ago.
It seems impossible. She doesn’t even know if Dot’s still alive. Also, every person Mabel talks to seems to need help first, with missing husbands, daughters, parents. Mabel finds her list is just getting longer, and she’s still no closer to finding Dot.
What she doesn’t know is that her list isn’t just about finding her old friend. And that if she can admit the secrets of the past, maybe she could even find happiness again…
A completely heartbreaking, beautiful, uplifting story, guaranteed to make you smile but also make you cry. Perfect for fans of A Man Called Ove, Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine, and The Keeper of Stories.

Makes you stop & think
Found the story a little slow to begin with but kept going & I'm so glad I did. A heartwarming story about love & loss & love again in later life, in a world back in the day where such love would have been frowned upon. New friendships formed in unusual ways & a different path to true love.

Sad but beautiful story
I started listening to this on my way to work and quickly decided it was far too sad, and was more suitable for the return journey. However, the story became quite beautiful and had many money moments. Well worth a listen!

Really enjoyable!
I’m not sure exactly what i was expecting but I really loved this book. It was so easy to listen to, sad in places but so lovely & inspiring too. It’s essentially a story of the many different kinds of love & friendship a person experiences.
The voice actor was great & her performance superb.
Highly recommended.

Loved Mabel!
Lovely story of Mabel, who loses her husband after 60 years of a rather reclusive marriage. He’s left her a list with just one thing on it - Find D. Mabel can only think he wants her to find her old friend Dot. She makes new friends during her search and through them learns things about herself that she’d forgotten, gains her confidence, and comes to realise she can be happy after all. Beautiful narrated.

Beautiful!
What a heart-warming story. I loved every minute and cried at the end. It made me feel hopeful that life can have such meaning no matter your age, that friends of all ages and stages are precious and that it's never too late to make amends. I was so impressed with the reader's ability to do all of the voices too.
