About this listen

Mike Gayle: emotions you'll never forget, stories you'll want to share.

Helen and Ben parted as heartbroken 18-year-olds and went their very separate ways.

Twenty years later, mother-of-two-teenagers Helen is still in Manchester, a part-time primary teacher, stunned by the behaviour of her love-rat husband. In an old T shirt and scruffy jeans, she feels at the lowest point in her life.

And suddenly, impossibly, Ben is standing on her doorstep. Tired maybe, lonely even, but clearly still the world-famous, LA-based multi-millionaire rockstar he has become.

Can you ever go back?

For Helen and Ben, so much has happened in the years between. But just to sit in the kitchen for a while and talk - that would be nice.

Before the world comes crashing in.

Friendship, love, heartache and hope collide in this unforgettable emotional journey, from the author of Half a World Away.

Truly beautiful

What a wonderful story, Mike does it again! I loved this story, wasn't expecting the twist Thank you Mike you must really understand people and all their feelings, imperfections and different layers to write something so wonderful! It was just over too soon! Narrator was brilliant too! Highly recommended!

Fantastic!

Mike Gayle's stories never disappoint.
I got so engrossed that I started it Saturday morning and had finished it by 6pm Sunday!!! It was an emotional story but also heart warming and funny at times. I can't wait to start another.

Enjoyable story; interesting twists

A good story as always from Mike Gayle, well read by Gabrielle Nellie-Pain (5*) but far less so by Chris Machari (3*). I thoroughly enjoyed all characters as rendered by Gabrielle, but the switch in their “voices” to Chris’ versions was an unnecessary distraction, and his characterisation and narrative style was far less successful. Leave it to Gabrielle next time.

Light and easy read

Not as good as some of his others. A little twee and predictable, did not raise much emotion for me

Lovely listen

But wasn't prepared for the twist! I would have loved a different outcome but in any case I really enjoyed this book and it did have a redeeming ending! I definitely recommend.

My 3rd Mike Gayle

Great story well told… missing the characters is testament to an authors ability to capture your imagination.

not predictable

as usual Mike delivers an emphatic view of relationships and people. Poignant yet light the characters are real and the story touching and unpredictable.

Excellent story and loved the performances

Excellent story, loved it being based in Manchester. lots of twists and turns and listened to it in one day. Really enjoyed the performance of both narrators, the female had an excellent South Manchester accent just sounded like my Auntie!.

Worth a listen.

It was a good story, I liked all of the characters we are supposed to like, but I felt it didn't have any va va voom.

I'm not sure if this was down to the narration. The male narration was strange. Every time he spoke, my mind left the story and became aware of being read to awkwardly.

The female narration was far better. I went back into the story, but I sometimes felt as though she needed to up Helen's (the main character) tempo.

There are sensitive parts of the book that are handled very well.

I know it's a book I'll not forget, but I'm not sure I'll miss it like I have done with Mike Gayles books before.
But still worth listening to.
