About this listen

Morse had never ceased to wonder why, with the staggering advances in medical science, all pronouncements concerning times of death seemed so disconcertingly vague.

The newly appointed member of the Oxford Examinations Syndicate was deaf, provincial and gifted. Now he is dead....

And his murder, in his north Oxford home, proves to be the start of a formidably labyrinthine case for Chief Inspector Morse, as he tries to track down the killer through the insular and bitchy world of the Oxford Colleges....

Great twists & turns as you expect from Colin Dexter. Samuel West has become a favourite narrator.

Deftly plotted and cryptically laid out for us to try and get our heads around - Morse as superb as ever. I think I'll need to listen to this 2 or 3 times until I understand absolutely everything that's going on.

Superb

A story of its time and it needs to be taken in that context. There are attitudes which are unlikely to be expressed by characters in a novel today. As a period piece this novel works.

Excellently read which adds to he strength of this story and its characters

. Thank goodness for Lewis not understanding the clues, because neither did I . I suspect the struggling Lewis started off as a plot device to allow the author to expand on slightly obscure storylines,

A complex reveal

I really enjoy trying to work out who did it. This one escaped me until the end

Another excellent Inspector Morse novel

It is rare that both books and TV series are as good as one another - but this is the case here.

Brilliant

Have loved all of the Morse books, great stories and great narration. As always an interesting plot with equally compelling characters

Another winner

After watching the Morse series over many years and wanting read them as well, it was a real success and treat to listen to this audible.

Terrific listen.

I have watched the TV series, but wasn't sure what to expect in written form. 'The Silent World of Nicholas Quinn' as a book is different, but just as enjoyable. Pleased and have already bought another in the series.

An absorbing story - the plot is improbable (the book's weakness) but fun in a murdery sort of way. Terrific atmosphere. Writing very immediate, like being there.

Beautifully read by Sam West who sensibly decides not to "ham it up" and instead puts in just enough so we can follow everything clearly, but not so much that we are robbed of using our imaginations - just the way I like a reading.

Great reading of an absorbing story

fixed in time, back in the mid 1970's, Morse is not a paragon of virtue, but a mere mortal with a very clever mind.
well characterised and brilliantly read.
have a beer, close your eyes and follow the master.

brilliant, a real roller coaster.

Plot was very confusing and Morse comes across as a dirty old man. Samuel West reads very well as ever

Confusing and creepy
