Summary
Spring, 1941. France has fallen but the Free French naval forces are in no mood to surrender. Royal Navy Sub-Lieutenant Harry Gilmour is also ready for action, despite the horrors of his first taste of submarine warfare.
When he is appointed as British Navy Liaison Officer aboard the Free French submarine Radegonde, he finds it anarchic, disorientating - and very French. Within its claustrophobic confines, suspicion and misunderstanding are rife.
So when Radegonde is sent on a mission to Martinique, it's vital that these proud men learn to work together, especially as it seems everyone from Churchill to de Gaulle - not to mention Hitler - has a stake in the outcome.
Will Harry be able to navigate these dangerous waters safely and return with hard-won wisdom, or will old enemies arise to sink him?

The Jury Is Still Out....
Great tales of dare and do plus family strife. Harry Gilmour could do with a bit more aggressive behaviour towards those that taunt him. Having said that, lol, we wouldn't have a story as he would have been jailed! Am still not convinced on the narration, something amiss. Otherwise a good book and look forward to book three. Am sure it's going to get better.

A great series of books.
i have enjoyed the kindle editions of this book and the whole series. David Black not only tells a tale, but also conveys the issues of the day for a very young RNVR officer. i hope hope book six is not the last!

Slightly disappointing
Very well written but the story spent too much time off the boat and wasn’t as exciting as book 1. A lot of heavy French accents as well which although authentic became a bit wearing despite the excellent narrator.

A cracking yarn of young submarine officers
I congratulate David Black for #2 of an elegant subsea series . Brisk, totally believable action. Lightly sketched characters. Somehow, the strategic and political background, the technical details and the crammed crew conditions are lightly blended into a novel of quality. I was immersed.

Dreadful Accents
Dreadful accents, especially French, spoil what might otherwise be an interesting book about the Service by David Black. No more James Langton for me.
