About this listen

Ex-British spy John Smith is nearly broke, has bad teeth, is lousy in bed, and drinks too much. But he's no fool. He's a man who knows his own limitations and works within them.

He blackmailed his way out of the secret service years ago and is barely making a living as a London private eye when his ex-wife comes calling and asks him to follow her philandering husband. But that sleazy, all-too-common job leads to some uncommon trouble...and Smith is thrown like a chunk of raw meat into a lion's den of international espionage, betrayal, and killing. His only hope of surviving is to outwit his clever and brutal adversaries at their own deadly game.

"Very astutely plotted, with many surprising twists and a sharp bite," (The New York Times)

"There's nothing ordinary about this adventure. It's big league intrigue." (Kirkus Reviews)

"A deadly, cold, serious drama of counter-espionage." (Atlanta Constitution)

"A witty spy story in the anti-James Bond tradition." (The Cedar Falls Courier)

This novel was original published under the title Private I and was adapted into a feature film starring Robert Horton, Jill St. John, and Sebastian Cabot.

OK

The Spy Killer. .. An Ok experience. I can't rave about it, it was entertaining and kept my interest. Storyline and characters a bit shallow.
Maybe that's just in comparison to modern spy thrillers. I received a free copy of this audio book at my own request and voluntarily leave this review.

A long quiet year in Switzerland.

"A long quiet year in Switzerland."
Set in the cold war days of the 1960s, The Spy Killer is told in the first person by Smith, the failing P.I. ('fat and selfish, going bald and too old'), engaged by his ex-wife to follow her presumed cheating husband. But a lot more was happening than simple adultery...
This is a good story of the noir kind, laid back main character, wry In observations, with several surprising twists. It is very much of it's time and most enjoyable because of it. The clear, well paced and intoned English accented narration of James Greville fits perfectly the the story telling of the main character, slightly subdued at first, but following the understanding and emotions being conveyed in the writing. His voicings of the other protagonists are also well accomplished - a nice performance.

A book to be enjoyed by both detective and spy book genre fans of the character infused type: well written with style, and equally well read. I was fortunate in being freely gifted with a complimentary copy of The Spy Killer by the rights holder following my request via Audiobook Boom. Thank you so much.
