About this listen

Grace Atherton has fallen out of love... and into life

Between the simple melody of running her violin shop and the full-blown orchestra of her romantic interludes in Paris with David, her devoted partner of eight years, Grace Atherton has always set her life to music.

Her world revolves entirely around David, for Grace’s own secrets have kept everyone else at bay. Until, suddenly and shockingly, one act tips Grace’s life upside down, and the music seems to stop.

It takes a vivacious old man and a straight-talking teenager to kickstart a new chapter for Grace. In the process, she learns that she is not as alone in the world as she had once thought, that no mistake is insurmountable, and that the quiet moments in life can be something to shout about …

For fans of The Keeper of Lost Things, The Truths and Triumphs of Grace Atherton is the story of a woman who has her heart broken, but then puts it back together again in the most uplifting and exquisite way.©2018 Anstey Harris. All rights reserved (P)2018 Simon & Schuster, UK. All Rights Reserved.

Critic reviews

'I adored this book! Exquisitely crafted, it’s a compassionate, heart-wrenching and ultimately uplifting tale of Grace and David’s complicated love that will keep you turning the pages. Read it. Like some of Grace’s decisions, it’s an absolute triumph' (Fionnuala Kearney)
'As elegant and uplifting as a classical sonata, with added kick from its unforgettably quirky characters. I was both engrossed in and moved by this fabulous debut' (Catherine Isaac, author of You Me Everything)
‘This book was so different from anything I’ve read before… it was beautiful, uplifting and really taught me a thing or two about the world of stringed instruments… The characters are diverse, the setting beautiful and the subject matter unique’ (Fabulous Book Fiend)

I had high hopes for this book given the other reviews. Perhaps I’m missing something but I found it to be very predictable, I lacked sympathy for Grace and the narratives regarding the instruments were frankly lengthy and boring. I had to really persevere to even complete it.

Predictable

This is a life affirming book.
Listening to it is an emotional rollercoaster as the amazing highs and horrendous lows of Grace’s life are unfurled. Sometimes I felt I knew what was coming next, but still I was shocked or thrilled as the detail was revealed by the story. Recommended.

Lovely listen.

A bit meh! Didn't enjoy the performance particularly, though the story held me in.

omg. This was the equivalent of the book you carry around under your nose until you've finished it. A fabulous story, visually stirring. True to life and moving. I loved it. Will now have to download all of Anstey Harris's other books before withdrawal sets in. Reader was perfect!

I just wanted to keep walking until the end

One of the best fiction books I listened to in a long time - looking forward to the author’s next novel.

Great Story & Performance

Such an enjoyable story excellently read. Loved all the detail about stringed instruments and the way the story wove all the narratives together. Couldn’t stop listening. Highly recommended

Remarkable

Although the narration was pleasant, I found parts of the book long winded; particularly the extensive descriptions of feelings and actions. Grace irritated me slightly but came through in the end I felt.

Pleasant but not remarkable.

The main character is quite wooden and at times annoying. other characters are too stereotypical to feel believable. I always finish a book before judging it but got tired of the detail in this book and it became a chore.

a bit underwhelming .

This book grew on me.
I spent the first quarter of it wanting to shake Grace to make her realise what an idiot she was. I didn't think I'd make it to the end, but then the story got a whole lot better.
I loved the cello references and the information about building and restoring them, I also really like the friendship between Grace, Nadia and Mr Williams.

It was well read by Tania Rodrigues and well worth a listen.

It grew on me.
