About this listen

Murder, mystery and a dog of distinction. Heathcliff Lennox investigates.

Twelve Saints, who are not true saints at all. They are the great and the good, although none are entirely great, nor good—indeed one is a murderer.

Temple House near Bath is built upon an old Roman Temple, the house bequeathed many centuries before to a secret order of old aristocracy. The 'Saints' are not true saints, they are remnants; the last of their line, they have wealth, but no heirs.

The Order may invite any such relict to join them. They will come to live in Temple House, they will become a revered and venerable Saint, and when they die all their wealth must go into the saints coffers.

Each Christmas these coffers are opened and the Saints—after much debate and contemplation—will donate a proportion of their wealth to a good and deserving cause.

This fine philanthropic task has followed the same line for hundreds of years—until now. It is Christmas 1923 and a Saint is found dead, murdered, and the killer is from within Temple House itself. The Order of the Saints is shrouded in secrecy and this dreadful deed cannot be allowed to expose them. And so their keeper of the books—the Dead Reckoner—suggests they call in Major Heathcliff Lennox and ex-Inspector Jonathan Swift to uncover the killer.

Major Heathcliff Lennox—ex WW1 war pilot, six feet, three inch, tousled dark blond hair, age around 30–named after the hero of Wuthering Heights by his romantically minded mother–much to his great annoyance.

Loved the story, but missed Sam’s narration. To me, he is Lennox. He had a great talent for the different voices, even the ladies. I will continue to read the books, but not sure I will listen to them. Missed Mr Fogg barking too!

Another great story from Lennox and swift

So this is the first Lennox mystery not read by Sam DP and I was disappointed not to have his voice. However, the narrator is good and had this been the first story, there would be no complaints. It’s just I miss Sam’s warm deep voice…… I still recommend these stories. Lennox and Swift are tremendous characters and the stories bowl along quite nicely.

Great story but miss Sam

Changing narrator is always a challenge this far into a series.

Nicholas boulton does a brillant job.

Story and writing is top notch as usual. Great closed circle mystery with a good dose of humour.

Great new narrator

A good book, but without Sam Dewhurst Philips, it wasn't Heathcliff Lennox for me. I hadn't realised how much I enjoy the books was down to the narrator. Sam is Heathcliff Lennox for me. but, it is a good book.

not the same

I have really enjoyed listening to this series but I am very disappointed that the narrator has been changed. I had to keep replaying parts of the book as I could not decipher whose voice was whose between Lennox and Swift. The different voices of the main characters seemed to have changed their personalities too.
I think it was a mistake to change the narrator at this stage.
A good story but from a listening point of view I was very disappointed.

Good story

Wow, what a wonderful surprise, I am not good with change and was very worried when I heard Sam was not narrating..it took 10 seconds listening to Nicholas for all fears to dissolve.
Absolutely brilliant narration and another fantastic story from Karen.
As always, characters are so different which makes each chapter more interesting wondering what they are going to get up to next. Sheer magic.

Wonderful ..

The new narrator does very little for the book, the voices give the regular characters are so wrong, Lennox and Swift sound almost identical and they both sound like men In their 50s not in their 30s. I missed the gentleness of Sam’s narrative especially in tender or emotional moments and found the new narrator’s voice grating. I struggled to get to the end of what is actually a very good story.

Please please bring back Sam

I love these stories. KBM has crafted an excellent period mystery with familiar characters and some excellent incidentals. I loved the "bomb" but I just can't get used to the new narrator. he has a fine voice and does good voices but after so many with Sam I just can't tell the voices apart and it doesn't sound right. I do hope Mr Dewhurst Phillips will return and is well.

Great story. Perfectly good narration but miss Sam DP

Story is great however the change of narrator has completely changed the personalities of the characters! The humour is missed as is the subtlety. Plus, the two main leads sound almost identical and over 60 rather than early thirties! Does anyone know why the change and if SDP is returning? He is a good narrator, just not right for Lennox!

Narrator change is disappointing
