Summary

Spring has brought many new beginnings into the world of Persimmon ‘Simmy’ Brown. Not only has her baby arrived, but she and her fiancé, Christopher, have moved to the historic village of Hartsop - and their forthcoming nuptials are only a short month away. But when a former acquaintance of Christopher’s reminds him of an undertaking made a decade previously that he hasn't fulfilled, their lives soon take a sinister turn.

Yet even with a young baby to consider, Simmy cannot ignore her instinct to investigate, especially when the murder has a personal link to her soon-to-be husband. Assisted by her would-be detective friend Ben, can Simmy puzzle out this reckoning from the past and protect her family?

Irritating

Constant references to 'the baby' really got on my nerves and I wondered whether the author had forgotten she had given it a name. Being a mum I know how all involving having a young baby is but i don't need the details of every feed, etc. I was bored. And then the story fizzled out.

I have read all of this series but doubt I'll invest in any more

Too much about the baby

Obviously pleased that Robin has arrived safely but there was too much detail about the baby and it distracted from the story.

Love these books

I enjoy this series immensely, although this one didn't enthrall me as much as previous ones. That is probably down to the fact that several of the new characters were thoroughly unlikable and so I wasn't rooting for them in the same way, and other, more beloved characters featured much less.
Still very worthy of five stars though, and I shall still look forward to future books.

Journeys too far into motherhood for a crime novel

Until now I have found this series enjoyable and engaging and Rebecca Tope's writing and observation is as good as ever. But I found the subject matter, documenting what it's like to be totally absorbed by a new baby, really had little place in cosy crime fiction. As part of Simmy's journey it's obviously an important milestone but the amount of coverage of the baby drowned out the part of the book relating to the murder and its solution and spoiled the whole point of the story for me. I also found Simmy's rather strident change of character struck a discordant note making it an uncomfortable and disappointing read.

Nothing like previous books

Dreadful, not a clear story to follow, writer seems to have become obsessed with babies and breast feeding and forgotten she is supposed to be a mystery writer
