About this listen

The gifted filmmaker, corduroy activist and amateur dentist, Richard Ayoade, first chanced upon a copy of The Two-Hander Trilogy by Harauld Hughes in a second-hand bookshop. At first startled by his uncanny resemblance to the author's photo, he opened the volume and was electrified. Terse, aggressive, and elliptical, what was true of Ayoade was also true of Hughes's writing, which encompassed stage, screen, and some of the shortest poems ever published.

Ayoade embarked on a documentary,
The Unfinished Harauld Hughes, to understand the unfathomable collapse of Hughes's final film O Bedlam! O Bedlam!, taking us deep inside the most furious British writer since the Boer War.

This is the story of the story of that quest.

Utter nonsense and very funny at times. When I snorted with laughter in the supermarket at one character’s desire to make a documentary about carrots because he now accepted that “most” vegetables were farmed by humans, I knew this was worth the read.

A fictional quest to rescue Harauld Hughes - the almost mythical mid-century playwright - from obscurity. Richard Ayoade's books are always a treat, and the audiobook versions even more so. Brilliantly funny (as always) and a great cast.

Worth the Audible Subscription Alone!

What a complete joy of a book! The madness of the entire story is so delicious, and the attention to detail in the gobits of poems and plays is just wonderful. I absolutely cried laughing throughout. The cast involved in this Audible version are perfect in their roles. I found myself picturing this as a 'Victoria Wood style Mockumentary' ...which i consider a significant compliment i might say...and have already recommended it to others.

Glorious madness!

a bit of a non-story, difficulty to follow. I found I wasn't invested in it at all

well written and amusing

Ayoade's other audio books are amazing but I had to stop listening to this as Noel Fielding has a lot of input in the first chapter and unfortunately, Noel is not as funny as he seems to think he is and is quite possibly the most annoying man in Europe. Will buy the paperback instead.

Had to stop listening.

Interesting story with lots of humour. Great use of voice actors, brought the characters to life. I particularly enjoyed the classic David Mitchell rant!

Wonderfully quirky

I really liked this - at times laugh out loud funny, very cleverly written & the different actors/voices added to fun. Surprised by a couple of the reviews saying the opposite- the character’s voices brought this to life. Four hours of
Utter pleasure. Recommended

Very very funny

I really enjoyed Richard Ayoade's last book and was interested to see what he came up with. So I wasn't really surprised when he presented a Wes Anderson-esque story about the making of a documentary about a Harold Pinter type writer. I was ready for the satire of literary documentaries (where the presenter goes on a journey). I didn't expect it to have interesting things to say about criticism of art and media commentators...and I didn't expect it to be as moving as it turned out to be. Genuinely loved it.

More than I expected
