About this listen

It's no secret that technology is moving faster than ever, but current business/IT strategies are not working. To survive the next wave of transformation, the relationship between businesses and technology must evolve. In The Value Flywheel Effect, David Anderson enables leaders to create an adaptive organization built upon embracing strategic thinking, team focus, and reduced time to value to drive business results.

The Value Flywheel Effect is a technique already being used by next-generation leaders and companies to succeed in the modern competitive landscape. Combining the power derived from the Value Flywheel and the situational clarity provided by Wardley mapping, organizations are able to sense and respond to change, easily navigating the rough waves ahead, including migrating to the cloud and serverless.

Every company that uses technology must act differently from the companies of yesterday. In The Value Flywheel Effect, David Anderson shows organizations how to understand and utilize the socio-technical intersection between business, technology, and people, giving your organization the edge it needs to navigate future challenges and build maximum situational awareness.

A decent audiobook on various things DevOps

At first I had problems with how to describe this book. Only after getting into half of it I've finally got the idea.

So let me try to summarize - it's a book on how to get results described as the Value Flywheel Effect process with the use of modern Cloud & Serverless solutions and how to map the system via Wardley Maps. Also we have some generic description about management practices that should be in place in order to make the wheel turn - like culture, vision, goal, etc..

In general - I have a mixed opinion on this one.

It is a book about the topic of DevOps - but only in part, and the focus is on rather high level of abstraction, so no out of the box solutions are referred to in here. Cloud & Serverless are viable options for some system architectures, while not so viable to others. So if you're a business person and consider using cloud - this book may give you a hint.

When it comes to Wardley Maps - the chapters present a really basic description on how to use Wardley Maps. There is a free PDF and audiobook on how to use those maps, though it has 700 something pages, so I guess that basics described in this Value Flywheel book are condensed in this good way. Well, at least it got me interested in Wardley Maps and I've bought the full book some time ago.

Generic managerial advice is just that - generic managerial advice full of trite sentences and sometimes empty words, but hey, it's a business book first and foremost.

And I'll stop here, as it's not my point to write a full dissertation on the topic.

Audiobook quality is top-notch, the lector is great, no further comments.

So, rating:
- 3 * is a baseline
- +1 * for condensing Wardley Maps
- +1 * for condensing Value Flywheel Effect
- -1* for the overall lack of identity in this book

So 4*

Why buy it?:
- if you want to learn about Wardley Maps but don't have 10h or so hours to properly dig into source material - the condensed material here is OK
- if you want to learn about the Value Flywheel Effect in general - it's also here and it's OK, you can dig more if interested

Otherwise I'd say you can find better material on the cloud elsewhere.

Great book

This is an exceptional book however very difficult to digest as an audio book as there are so many visual aids in the physical copy. My advise is get the real thing!
