The Middle East War is finally over, and veteran Cole Everett is trying to build a new life in Los Angeles, California, and hopefully reconnect with his cousin, Sean Martin, a private investigator.

And I wasn't disappointed; both were new to me, and I thought Duncan did a great job with the narration.

The characters had good backstories, and the general storyline kept me engaged throughout the book.

I even thought the vampires were memorable and endearing by the end of the book. Well worth the read/listen.

The narration was good and easy to listen to, but I did speed it up slightly to 1.25 on Audible, which is usual for me.

This is the second in the series. This I find has romance and mystery but I also find it fun. Cole is back from war and has PTSD. He is trying to fit back into non military life. Cole decides to reunite with Sean but when doing so finds Sean is in a relationship with a vampire, Oh my! This is beyond Cole’s ability to accept until he is faced with Rafael. Then Cole’s opinion on vampires does an about turn. While he is getting to know Rafael things happen that cause both Cole and Rafael to get involved with illegal things. This not the type story I normally listen to but after the first in the series I had to try this one too. To me these are fun, enjoyable stories. The characters are likable. The story moves right along and there are more than a few times I got a laugh at the happenings. The narration by Duncan Prescott fit the characters perfectly.

The war is over and Cole, a military tech specialist, has returned to civilian life with PTSD after losing his best mate. When he meets Rafael, an old and powerful vampire, Cole’s prejudices fall away as the two men are consumed by each other. Meanwhile, Cole struggles to find work but eventually secures a security job at a secretive tech company. However, when he starts work, something feels off. With countless lives under threat, Rafael and Cole team up to restore world peace. I was keen to read this after really enjoying the first book and I loved it just as much! The first half of the book is pure paranormal romance, concentrating on Cole and Rafael’s growing relationship, while the latter half ramps up the espionage / action tension. I really like JP Bowie’s ‘fly on the wall’ (third-person) narratives. While they generally tag along with the main character, occasionally shifting the focus to other characters in concurrent scenes gives his stories a freshness and immediacy that suits the action. I’ve loved Duncan Prescott’s audio narration too, he sets a good pace, does a good range of accents and voices, and injects the right emotion into the dialogue.

An exciting and fast moving tale. Cole, returning to the US as the brutal war ends at last, has PTSD, and is finding it hard to get a job. Estranged from his cousin for 10 years, he decides to try a reconciliation. But his cousin's mate, Arturo, is a vampire. Cole is horrified and rejects his cousin's offer of friendship, accusing him of betraying humankind.
How he learns to see things differently, accepting that humans and vampires can live together in peace, takes place over a matter of days and weeks. A lot of this acceptance comes about when Rafael, a senior and important vampire, seduces him. As his lover, Cole becomes a part of human/vampire society. But things are not that straightforward - a job as a security guard, basic unskilled work he takes temporarily, reveals a strange and secret situation, involving government military contract work.
Rafael has contacts and influence in high places, and putting Cole's suspicions alongside his own knowledge, he realises that this may be connected with the sudden disappearance of the Russian Premier and plans for the development of a weapon capable of immense destruction.
The investigation rapidly escalates into violence, endangering not just lives but world peace.
