Summary
Concealed by a shroud of dirty brown velvet was what looked like a heap of rags. In a desolate subterranean car park of a Shopping Centre, Dorothy Sanders pulled back the velvet curtain revealing the grim discovery of a woman’s body. Inspector Michael Burden, for a while conducting the investigation without the help of Wexford’s intuitive genius, blunders down a number of blind alleys before uncovering the truth. Who would garrote a middle-aged housewife and leave her body in the parking garage of a suburban shopping mall? Chief Inspector Wexford is no sooner on the case than a car bomb's explosion lands him in the hospital. It's now up to Mike Burden to step in and solve the case. He's got a suspect . . . but will he be able to make him talk?

Couldn’t hear any more
Unfortunately the narrator could be narrating the best story in the world and wouldn’t have mattered.
Stopped listening or carrying what happened in the story and had to stop:-(
Story might have been good but couldn’t engage with it and had to stop before I lost the will to live…

A typical Ruth Rendall with meandering story lines, only finding out the conclusion in the last 5 mins.

Spoilt by the narrator
I struggled to finish because the narrator sounded so bored, got his accents mixed up occasionally. It was a reasonable story. The editing was not perfect, a voice suddenly said ‘disc 8’ so the book is also available on CD. All these small things made it less enjoyable than it could have been.

Good story …,
Don’t be put off by the narrator’s offhand style at the start. He expresses the various characters’ voices extremely well, and seems more involved as the story progresses. The ending is satisfying surprising!

Surprisingly good
I enjoyed Robin Bailey’s sonorous narration. Although the story was dated what would you expect from something written so many years ago. The plot had a number of red herrings, explored and dismissed. The plot rattled along and the answer was revealed. The story was a freebie which I like in order to spread out the ones that require credits. It is only June and I have only 4 left until 24 arrive in December! The quality of the freebies is variable but I particularly enjoyed Kim which some might say was even more ‘dated’!

average story; great narrator
I found this to be a fairly pedestrian murder mystery. It was ok in that you wanted to know 'whodunnit' but that's all. The suspect, Clifford was interesting, partly due to the excellent narrator.

Over long as usual
I quite like this narrator but Wexford and Burden's voices are too similar; it is difficult to know which one is speaking. The plot was ok, but the story was too long, repetitive and overly descriptive. The sense of menace was good.
