About this listen
Two lonely women. An unlikely friendship. And one big life lesson: never be ashamed to ask for more....
After a major life upheaval on the eve of her 40th birthday, a reluctant Kate Parker finds herself volunteering at Lauderdale House for Exceptional Ladies. There she meets 97-year-old Cecily Finn. Cecily's tongue is as sharp as her mind but she has lost her spark, simply resigning herself to the Imminent End.
Having no patience with Kate's plight, Cecily prescribes her a self-help book with a difference - it's a 1957 cookery manual, featuring menus for anything life can throw at 'the easily dismayed'.
Will Kate find a menu to help her recover from her broken heart? If Kate moves forward, might Cecily too?
The cookbook holds the secrets of Cecily's own remarkable past and the story of the love of her life. It will certainly teach Kate a thing or two.
So begins an unlikely friendship between two lonely and stubborn souls - one at the end of her life, one stuck in the middle - who come to show each other that food is for feasting, life is for living and the way to a man's heart is...irrelevant!

such a heart warming story
what an amazing story, using a lovely mix of fact and fiction, without a 'sickly seeet' happy ever after ending. instead creating a desire to look inwards, and understand only you can make you happy. thank you Vicky Zimmerman

Exceptional Book.. a very moving & warm listen
I don’t think I’ve ever cried over a fictional book character before. The relationship conveyed in this story is beautiful and the way the two women help to heal each others hearts is truly the most moving story. I couldn’t stop listening and just wanted to hear more. It ended too fast... I wanted more!! Just lovely. Well done Vicky. I found this book as I was searching for others narrated by Beth Chalmers... what a gift she has. x

Totally Memorable
Several years ago, I read a couple of Stella Newman's books. I loved them. The way she wrote about food, the link of emotions to dishes, with such brilliant descriptions.
I listened to this audio book and had a couple of late nights, as I had to listen on. I totally invested in the characters.
My Grandmother was in service and was the most incredible Baker. if ever you were sad, down, happy, thoughtful..she would bake something to fit your mood. she was tiny 4'10", but she was mighty... full of life and pizzazz., in her own gentle way.
This book is a celebration of matriachs, food, friendship and love. How we comfort ourselves and can be kind to ourselves with good food, cooked well. Accompanied by a glass or two and some fabulous writing.
Can't wait for the next book!!!

Great book
I really like books like this that weave some elements of real life and people with a made up story. This one did not disappoint.
