Summary
Oceans and decades apart, two women are inextricably bound by the secrets between them.
Japan, 1957. Seventeen-year-old Naoko Nakamura's prearranged marriage to the son of her father's business associate would secure her family's status in their traditional Japanese community, but Naoko has fallen for another man - an American sailor, a gaijin - and to marry him would bring great shame upon her entire family. When it's learned Naoko carries the sailor's child, she's cast out in disgrace and forced to make unimaginable choices with consequences that will ripple across generations.
America, present day. Tori Kovac, caring for her dying father, finds a letter containing a shocking revelation - one that calls into question everything she understood about him, her family and herself. Setting out to learn the truth behind the letter, Tori's journey leads her halfway around the world to a remote seaside village in Japan, where she must confront the demons of the past to pave a way for redemption.
In breathtaking prose and inspired by true stories from a devastating and little-known era in Japanese and American history, The Woman in the White Kimono illuminates a searing portrait of one woman torn between her culture and her heart, and another woman on a journey to discover the true meaning of home.

hauntingly beautiful book
Absolutely loved this story based upon historical facts. Very sad but touching. A love story in essence. I didn't like the narrators voice when speaking in the male characters. Otherwise it was wonderfully narrated. Lovely read.

A tender hearted read
I listened to this on Audible. I liked the story and the way it jumped from past to present to reveal the secrets and truths. It was hard on the emotions especially the epilogue, when you learn that even though this was a work of fiction, facts were thrown in to mould and shape the story to make it more credible to the reader. I felt such compassion for the main character and her struggle with her culture and traditions and the love she carried with her till the end. Admittedly I did well up a bit in places at the sufferings, sadness and sacrifices throughout the story. The narration was good on the whole, though it irked me slightly with the childish voices at times. I would highly recommend this book.

Narrator
Whilst I enjoyed the story and description of customs etc, I struggled with some of the narration, particularly at the beginning of the book. The lispy little girl was grating and the male characters were made to sound like Popeye! But I persevered and generally enjoyed the book.

Persevered past the voice irritation
I’m so pleased I managed to get past the (what I found to be) irritating voices the narrator does, particularly for the main male character. It almost caused me to stop listening. However, the story is lovely and I’m delighted I got past that (I stopped being quite so annoyed by it as the story unfolded).

Oh my goodness. Incredible.
I’m normally into Rom Com or light hearted murder mysteries but this book caught my eye. In two days it’s finished. I didn’t ever want it to stop. Amazingly written and very well narrated. I shed some tears and learnt a lot. You will love this book. It’s powerful. The epilogue at the end was very interesting, the author opens up about how she came to write this book. Beautiful.
