Summary

Just outside Los Angeles, a prisoner hidden away for 70 years sits up, gets off the bed and disappears through a solid wall.

In Australia, a magician impresses audiences by producing real elephants. Nobody realizes it's not an illusion.

Across the world, individuals and ancient organizations with supernatural power suddenly detect the presence of something even they can't understand.

At the center of it all, Seb Varden, a 32-year old musician with a secret in his past, slits his wrists, is shot dead and run over on the freeway. He's had better days.

Seb is about to discover the universe is a far more complicated place than he'd ever imagined.

Really enjoyed the story

Lots of interesting ideas, easy to listen to. The non American accents were appalling but I just ignored that! I'd like to find out what happens next.

An interesting mix...

... of reality, aliens and magic.
Sainsbury is definitely one of the current phantasy writers who has new approaches to old concepts.
My only slight issue with this audio book was that it was a bit too monotone to my taste. The bits with accents were pretty good, tho, which is important to me.

Not for English audiences

Quite how you get a job reading an audiobook with a key character from England, when you cannot do an English accent, is beyond me. It has made this book unbearable to listen to, however the story turns out. I'll buy a hard copy and hope the US accents in my head are better than this English one was in my ears.

Interesting

I suspect that I am like many on here and read this genre quite a bit. I liked this, I found the laying out of the premise good, the characters pretty solid and the conclusion nice and open for another book.

It is an easy listen, apart from the narrator actually whispering to denote the whispering voice of one of the characters: tricky when you turn it up then get deafened by a normal voice.

I look forward to the next one.

I personally loved this

Great mix of sci-fi, drama, comedy and a hint of fantasy.

I found it a great listen, I'm sure as a book it would be a page turner. The storyline was fun, strangely relatable in some ways and a joy to listen to.

the narrator really captured the essence of the story and always pitched the characters as I pictured them

Definitely worth a listen, I can't wait to listen to the next book.

( I fortunately bought the series through the audible BOGOF offers, so it wasn't too expensive for me)

Not disappointed

I already knew I’d probably enjoy this. It wasn’t what I expected but was very good. Better actually. Top marks

Great Audiobook

an excellent audio book that was both well read and also had an exciting storyline.
I will definitely buy the other books in the series. I cannot recommend this audio book highly enough.
