About this listen

Eli’s asked to perform his magic act at a swanky charity gala, the Zombie Ball - a former zombie pub crawl which has grown into an annual high-class social event. What begins as a typical stage show for Eli turns deadly when two of the evening’s sponsors are found murdered under truly unusual circumstances. Compounding this drama is the presence of Eli’s ex-wife and her new husband, Homicide Detective Fred Hutton. Under pressure to solve the crime before the 800 guests depart, Eli and his detective nemesis go head-to-head to uncover the bizarre clues that will unravel this macabre mystery.

Just delightful!

The entire series is just my cup of tea. Witty, magical, and charming mystery stories with nothing crude or overdone to spoil them.

Charity event with a difference

I did enjoy this book but it is shorter than the previous books and seemed to be lacking the flare I have come to expect. Don't get me wrong I did enjoy it but Eli only had an hour and a half to solve the murders, the rest was (excuse the pun) setting the stage. It was interesting and I did pick up on some clues but the show business/charity event was a bit flat compared to the theme park setting of the previous book. The story starts out different too, with Eli and his uncle giving an interview to a reporter and then it goes back in time as Eli explains how he solved his first murder case and met his ex wife's new husband. This means the story focuses on Eli and his girlfriend or even his uncle sadly weren't present. Still a fun listen but not my favourite. Off to see what the next book has in store.
When Eli's rival pulls out of doing a magic show at a charity event, Eli is reluctant to take his place until he he hears the headlining act is a well known comedian. The annual high-class social event likes to show off there biggest donors but as the men use to be business partners the tension is high not to show favourites but still keep everybody happy. Then the sound mike on one of the executives goes quite and Eli finds himself working along side his ex wife's new husband as they try to solve a murder. Can Eli put his keen eye to good use or will it take all the magic tricks up his sleeve to catch the killer?
I like the narrator. He puts on a show all of his own to entertain the listener.

That was quality!

That was a brilliant story I really enjoyed it. I listened from start to finish in one day. Jim Cunningham's performance is wonderful as always with an excellent selection of voices. It was over 4 hours long and you know what, that was the perfect length of time. I never get bored with this book series but with this book the time was spot on. The setup for the story is fantastic the concept of the charity event and stuff happens feels like a classic murder mystery situation. I had a great time with this book. looking forward to the next one!

interesting

I have enjoyed the Eli Marks series, it gives you an incite into magic and magic acts, and the stories are ok.

Time to bow out

Set before all the series' predecessors. An improved plot. Was it written out of order like this? The change made it less formulaic though. This is the last I will read of Eli M, but I enjoyed the brief trip through these first 6 detective stories in the series.
