About this listen

Clashing empires, forbidden romance, and a long-forgotten queen destined to save her people—New York Times bestselling author Tahereh Mafi’s first novel in this epic, romantic fantasy series inspired by Persian mythology.

To all the world, Alizeh is a disposable servant, not the long-lost heir to an ancient Jinn kingdom forced to hide in plain sight.

The crown prince, Kamran, has heard the prophecies foretelling the death of his king. But he could never have imagined that the servant girl with the strange eyes, the girl he can’t put out of his mind, would one day soon uproot his kingdom – and the world.

Perfect for fans of Leigh Bardugo, Tomi Adeyemi, and Sabaa Tahir, this is the explosive first book in a new fantasy trilogy from the New York Times bestselling and National Book Award-nominated author, Tahereh Mafi.

“An original fantasy saga threaded through with Persian myths written by a queen of the genre. A* grade world-building” – The Times Best YA Books for Summer 2022

‘Forbidden love and Persian mythology are at the center of this new trilogy series, and it might be Mafi's best work yet.’ – Cosmopolitan, Best YA Books of 2022

‘Master of YA fantasy’ Pop Sugar

‘Gut-wrenchingly beautiful.’Kirkus Reviews

‘This story is so magical and transportive that I fully expected the book would know the moment I'd finished – within hours, no less – and promptly unravel into a pile of jewels and silks in my hands. Mafi's diamond-bright lyrical voice weaves a tale that is gilded in magic, laced with subterfuge, adorned with the brocade of a tortuous romance, and richly embroidered with Persian mythology. I cannot wait for more.’ – Roshani Chokshi, New York Times bestselling author of The Gilded Wolves

Critic reviews

"In a tale as exquisitely crafted as one of Alizeh’s own garments, Mafi weaves a spell of destiny and danger, forbidden love and courtly intrigue, magic and revolution." (Cassandra Clare, number one New York Times best-selling author of The Last Hours)

"I've been longing to read a story inspired by The Shahnameh, and This Woven Kingdom captivated me with its deft worldbuilding and searing romance. Alizeh's quiet strength unfurls against a darkly magical backdrop. This book is a glittering jewel, complete with razor-sharp edges." (Renée Ahdieh, number one New York Times best-selling author of the Wrath and the Dawn series)

Fantastic

A great story, the development of characters is enjoyable. Great twists and turns. Reminded me a bit of Cinderella.

A Slow burn to a Tantalising Adventure

I admit, I almost couldn’t bear the slowness of the story - realising how very few scenes were covered halfway into the book. What keeps you going on is how little you know about what’s truly going on and how very keen you feel to read on to if only to find out the answers to even very basic questions. And then, towards the end, it’s as if the author throws you into a whirlpool of tantalising mythology, romance and conflict; ensuring that when you reach the last page, you’ll be left in absolute need to start reading the sequel.

Loved it!

I just love the main character. She is not only badass but also has this great personality. So well constructed. All characters are so vivid. The plot was great. It has everything I love in fantasy. I just can't wait for the continuation.

Exquisite

The story is captivating and the narrator perfectly captures and brings to life the gorgeous poetic and floral writing style of Tahereh Mafi. This story is such a gem I can’t wait to listen to the next instalment. I’m also going to buy the books for the family.

Good start, disappointing ending

Started off well but as soon as they had all the romance tropes, the plot just disappeared. Great narration though.

More Please!! Great Read

I'm sincerely hoping the end of the book means there'll be a follow on book. Thoroughly enjoyable read. Great characters that are well written. The elements of humour are well embedded and truly enhance the characters. I was left wanting to go to the next book which at present there isn't a follow on. Fingers crossed in future there will be!

It’s good however the characters are inconsistent in there intelligence

The main character is supposed to be a very clever girl however she keeps doing things that make no sense and sometimes even put her life in danger! Oftentimes this doesn’t even further the plot!
However other times she is shown to be incredibly intelligent wich makes her stupid mistakes feel all the more stupid! And it’s incredibly infuriating!

Other then that I absolutely love this book and it is very interesting and well worded! It is perfect for anyone trying to pick up new vocabulary!

A great listen, Kate Reading was brilliant

One of the best audible listens I've had. The narrator, Kate Reading, did an amazing job with the different voices. Couldn't fault it
