Brilliantly Gripping but Shocking

I have mixed feelings about this book. It has some brilliantly gripping writing with swift action and tension building moments .There are also some violently shocking scenes juxtaposed with banale banter.I nearly did not make it to the end but the voice actor got me there. For those tempted to give up, I would suggest soldiering on because there is some rewarding writing amongst the troughs. The narration in this saved the day for me.

I had been enjoying the series of Matilda Darke books and had bought into the characters. Difficult to critique without spolers but having established the key characters for six books the impact of the storyline in Book7 has a punch. I am not sure it would have the same impact on listeners new to the series .

There are plot reference to earlier books so beware spoilers if you have not read these books in order.

What!!!

Enjoyed the previous books although there seemed to be a gradual increase in horror and gore
This was like a violent computer game in written form with relationships and chatacters previously developed gone.
Will read the reviews carefully before reading another in this series although i forsee it will not be a cheerful read!!

Pure genius!

I read a lot of books, about 6 - 8 a week, but this has to be one of the best I read this year. The action is nonstop, with something happening all the time. The characters are very believable, and all have a place in the story. Extremely well written, and brilliantly narrated.

Michael Wood on top form

I have enjoyed all the DCI Darke books so far but this one is by far the best. It’s hard to see how Michael Wood will top this one. I’ve already downloaded the next in the series and can’t wait to see what HMET will get up to next.

One note of caution - it’s worth reading this series in order if you can as the crime in this one follows on from an earlier book in the series.

Each book in this series gets better

I was recommended the Matilda Darke series from another authors book club. They have not disappointed.

Not good.

I think this was the most disappointing book of the DI Matilda Darke series. The story was moderate but the English grammar and syntax were by far the worst in the series. Was the author never taught about the relevance of subordinate clauses? Some are so bad as to make a mockery of the story. A real shame.

This book has broken me!!

OMG I had palpitations whilst listening to this book and by the end I was completely broken. It is totally and absolutely heartbreaking. This is my favourite Matilda Darke book so far despite the effect it has had on my metal health!! The whole team, includung Matilda are at risk and that is really all I can say without giving too much away. Bloody brilliant but make sure you have a box of tissues handy!!

Excellent narration, as always, by Stephanie Beattie.

Gripping and suspenseful

Talking about suspense! I can’t hardly breathe with anticipation of the events unfolding, and this is while Matilda is in a coma. Michael Wood, you are my new fave author. What’s next ?
