Summary

Damien Daniels has been murdered, shot through the chest by an unseen marksman. It looks like a professional job, but there are no clues as to who pulled the trigger. The only witness to the shooting, Gideon Blake, is unable to provide any information that would help the police.

However, a cryptic list he later discovers hidden amongst the dead man's possessions warns of a dark and terrible conspiracy. Disturbed by his findings, Gideon soon finds himself drawn deeper into the mystery, one that he must solve before the marksman targets his next victim.

Good old thriller

Nice listen, good story that kept moving. Decent amount of horse related plot and countryside stuff.
Enjoyed it and finished it fast!

A fast moving guessing game.

I liked the people in the story, the setting and also the unexpected twists and turns. I suspected the villain early on, but a description of his homecoming and relationship with his animals put me off the scent and I thought it clever the way the story wound round to that point again. It was a good story well read.

Great Listen

As good as Dick Francis or John Francome with more interesting characters

Worth a second listen

Any additional comments?

When a story absorbs attention, sometimes details are missed and a second listen is enjoyable as it fills in the gaps. I'll be listening to this one again. The hero is believable and appealing. His life and relationships are woven into the narrative well and though the villain is well flagged, there are plenty of surprises along the way to a solution of the mystery. The horse world in which the events take place is well described.

if you liked Dick Francis...

This book has all the classic DF elements.
As it progressed, I found it progressively harder to put down.

Thin plot, slow action

What a slow story! Very thin plot & far too pretentious. Would have made a reasonable short story. Jonathan Keeble is always good to listen to, but even he must have struggled with this
