About this listen

The No. 1 Sunday Times bestseller from the author of A Little Life

'I’m not sure I’ve ever missed the world of a book as much' –
The Observer

To Paradise is a bold, brilliant novel spanning three centuries and three different versions of the elusive idea of utopia; driven by Hanya Yanagihara’s understanding of our desire to protect those we love – lovers, children, friends, family and even our fellow citizens – and the pain that ensues when we cannot.

In an alternate version of 1893 America, New York is part of the Free States, where people may live and love as they please (or so it seems).

In a 1993 Manhattan besieged by the AIDS epidemic, a young Hawaiian man lives with his much older, wealthier partner, hiding his troubled childhood and the fate of his father.

In 2093, in a world torn apart by plagues and governed by totalitarian rule, a powerful scientist’s damaged granddaughter tries to navigate life without him – and solve the mystery of her husband’s disappearance.

What unites these characters, and these Americas, are their reckonings with the qualities that make us human – fear, love, shame, loneliness – and the longing to find a place in an earthly paradise.

‘Not only rare . . . revolutionary’ – Michael Cunningham, author of The Hours

‘Prepare to weep in public and be utterly transformed’ – Stylist

Some wonderful insights and sensitively drawn emotional portraits. But story itself was always a second thought here.

3.5 overall Interesting but not enthralling

Nice book in some ways but hated the last section and found it too long.

Amazing

Wonderful story and so well narrated. Excellent storytelling with some chilling reflections on how current issues may play out in the future. I think the author is remarkable with a touch of Margaret Atwood in how she sees what may happen.

Fantastic

There are very few words that can describe simply how incredible this book is, and how masterfully the audiobook brings it to life. A true masterpiece for our times.

Masterpiece

I didn’t know what to expect. It’s so different to A Little Life, which was more to my usual preference of fiction. This is equally as brilliant. Multiple stories woven into one. Tragic and painful but beautiful as well. I initially wasn’t sure about the alternative realities. The pandemics were so close that I know we could see this in our future. This author will forever be a go to for me.

Sigh…

Though this book took some serious concentration, it was so worth it. A complex multilayered novel with plenty to say about the state of America. Loved it. She’s a very talented author and I’m going to try her others now

Incredible book

Absolutely loved this book. All the narrators are excellent. I am always a bit reluctant to listen to books with more than one narrator, so glad I did this time.

Stunning

It took me some time to get into this and put the stories together, but I found myself waking up thinking how prescient this amazing book is.
