Walking from his home in the Borders, through the historical landscape of Scotland and northern England, he takes us on a pilgrimage in the footsteps of saints and scholars, before arriving for a secular retreat on the Holy Isle.

Lindisfarne, famous for its monastery, has long been a place of sanctuary. It is an island rich in history: The Romans knew it as Insula Medicata; it reached the height of its fame in the dark ages, even survived Viking raids, before ultimately being abandoned after Henry VIII's dissolution of the monasteries. Today, the isle maintains its position as a space for retreat and spiritual renewal.

To the Island of Tides is a meditation on the power of place, but also a more personal journey - a chance for a personal stocktaking and a reflection on where life leads us.

A truly remarkable and beautiful book, one I shall definitely return to. The narration fits the book perfectly. Download this and sit back and enjoy. Be prepared to be moved almost to tears with the authors thoughts.

I really learnt a lot about the history of Lindisfarne. The author opens his heart to St. Cuthbert and whilst following the Saint's footsteps he looks back on and forward to his own life.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and the journey taken through the Borders. The familiarity of the area and the way the author describes his walks along well trodden paths, and those less used, takes you on the same journey. Sharing his inner thoughts as you travel together, gives the reader an opportunity to examine their own inner feelings, yet not as a 'navel gazing' exercise but rather as a chance to open their minds to the future.
A well constructed narrative which makes an excellent audio book.

I wasn’t sure I would like this book. It is not my usual literary choice. The author starts by reminiscing about a childhood trip with friends to Lindisfarne. It takes no more than five minutes for a smile to appear on my face, a smile I could feel widen. One of those smiles that makes one look like they fell asleep with a coat hanger in their mouth. This truly is a wonderful book, one feels as though one is on the journey with the author. He describes everything so poetically without it being unnecessarily poetic. Peace and calm overcomes one with each additional minute of sublime audio.

Where do I start, except to simply say "just buy it today".

Buy the book and tell me you didn't enjoy the story, the Author's insights and introduction to his style - and the wonderful scenery and Heritage of the locations visited and discovered during his Odyssey from Scotland over the borderlands.
And over to the mystical and mythical island of Lindisfarne (or Holy Island), and the nearby Farne Islands..

Buy the book and tell me honestly, that you don't want to walk in Alistair Moffat's own steps, and experience some part of his thoughts and impressions. Imagine the author with friends as boys spending that night on the beach; how he kept watch, with the sweep of the Lighthouse, of Longstone.

Buy the audio book and tell me you don't think to the lament of the monks in the dull light of History and remember-
"...Save us - from the wrath of the Norsemen".
