About this listen

Bloomsbury presents Tom Lake by Ann Patchett, read by Meryl Streep.

The breathtaking new novel from Ann Patchett – a Sunday Times and No. 1 New York Times bestseller

‘Filled with the moments I live for in a story’
BONNIE GARMUS, author of Lessons in Chemistry

‘[Tom Lake] has it all ... Young love, sibling rivalry and deep mother-daughter relationships’
REESE WITHERSPOON

‘One of the most beloved authors of her generation’
SUNDAY TIMES

There's more to every love story than what we choose to tell...

It’s spring and Lara’s three grown daughters have returned to the family orchard. While picking cherries, they beg their mother to tell them the one story they’ve always longed to hear – of the film star with whom she shared a stage, and a romance, years before.

Tom Lake is a meditation on youthful love, married love, and the lives parents lead before their children are born. Both hopeful and elegiac, it explores what it means to be happy even when the world is falling apart.

‘One of our greatest living chroniclers of love and marriage … Expect wonder; Patchett always delivers’ ELLE

Critic reviews

Filled with the moments I live for in a story – careful, compelling insights into human nature, the most effortless humour, and the kind of vivid descriptions that reveal exactly how something is (Bonnie Garmus, bestselling author of LESSONS IN CHEMISTRY)

The story is quietly gripping, with 3D characters who all feel very much alive, helped by Meryl Streep’s beautiful voice. What a great novel!

Wonderful narrator, great story!

This was a welcome antidote to the recent books I have read or listened to.
Adult children returning home to the family farm due to the pandemic get their mum to tell part of her life story. Much of her story the children get to hear but we get to hear all the bits she leaves out of the retelling to them.
It is warm and mostly gentle. It speaks of deep love and family relationships and how we grow in our understanding of ourselves with time.

Warm story - beautifully told

This book was such a pleasure to listen to and I loved escaping into the world for a while every day. Fantastic characters, fantastic setting of the cherry orchard and Tom Lake and beautiful observations of life. Loved it.

Rarely give 5 stars but this is a perfect narrator with a great story to tell, a perfect combination for the summer.

Fantastic

This is such a beautifully written and skillfully developed story - that I am almost regretful I listened in lieu reading it. However, the narration by Meryl Streep is unsurprisingly fabulous. All in all, quiet the enjoyable experience!

Well written, compelling story- narrated with star power!

This was such a wonderful audio book. The narration was perfectly pitched- what casting! - and the story unfolding had the right blend of warmth, gentle humour and pathos. A perfect combination to enjoy.

A wonderful meandering story beautifully narrated by Meryl Streep. I am so sad to finish it!

A real treat!

This is the first audiobook that I felt has completely come alive with the narration. The story itself is something fall in love with, with all its intricacies and human fragility, but Meryl takes it to a whole new level. An absolute joy to listen to.

Incredible narration
