Summary
You’ve seen it all before. A malicious online rumor costs a company millions. A political sideshow derails the national news cycle and destroys a candidate. Some product or celebrity zooms from total obscurity to viral sensation. What you don’t know is that someone is responsible for all this. Usually, someone like me.
I’m a media manipulator. In a world where blogs control and distort the news, my job is to control blogs - as much as any one person can.
In today’s culture...
- Blogs like Gawker, Buzzfeed, and the Huffington Post drive the media agenda.
- Bloggers are slaves to money, technology, and deadlines.
- Manipulators wield these levers to shape everything you read, see, and watch - online and off.
Why am I giving away these secrets? Because I’m tired of a world where blogs take indirect bribes, marketers help write the news, reckless journalists spread lies, and no one is accountable for any of it. I’m pulling back the curtain because I don’t want anyone else to get blindsided.
I’m going to explain exactly how the media really works. What you choose to do with this information is up to you.

essential reading
I listened to this book while the US elections were on and it really gave me a lot to consider.
My mother always used to say 'believe none of what you hear and only half of what you see'. these days it seems you can't believe anything.

Great read for anyone in PR or digital media.
Narration wasn’t bad by the author, I see some complaining here. It was a very insightful read, worth the money / credit.

More relevant than ever
Listened after reading this book in 2013 and it’s probably more relevant now as a warning than it was then.

First half was really good
I got this on audible. I got a lot of value from the first half, the second half was a bit boring. I feel that Ryan’s voice was a bit too deep and monotone to really enjoy this fully as an audio book. Either way it was worth the listen.

An insider provides excellent insight.
Ryan Holiday sheds light on how modern forms of media operate and what motivates them. Not in pursuit of the truth, to inform, to aid justice, or, at the most basic level, to inform the reader. Instead, create content solely for the purpose of generating clicks and website traffic, which translate into income or revenue. Very insightful and a must-read for anyone who is mildly sceptical of the current phase of the media operation (I say this with the hope that it will eventually return to true journalism based on an attempt to accurately represent the truth).

V. Informative
Couldn't believe the extent to which some of these blogs go to for clicks! Age of clickbait!

Fantasitc story, poor narration
The story is mind-blowing, helps better understanding the media. The author narrated it who is not an actor, for me as a non-native he was more difficult to listen to than actor-narrators of other audiobooks.
