Zoe, a sometime artist, is from California. Martin, an engineer, is from Yorkshire. Both have ended up in picturesque Cluny, in central France. Both are struggling to come to terms with their recent past - for Zoe, the death of her husband; for Martin, a messy divorce.
Looking to make a new start, each sets out alone to walk two thousand kilometres from Cluny to Santiago de Compostela, in northwestern Spain, in the footsteps of pilgrims who have walked the Camino (the Way) for centuries. The Camino changes you, it's said. It's a chance to find a new version of yourself, and a new beginning. But can these two very different people find themselves? Will they find each other?
In this smart, funny and romantic journey, Martin's and Zoe's stories are told in alternating chapters by husband-and-wife team Graeme Simsion and Anne Buist. Two Steps Forward is a novel about renewal - physical, psychological and spiritual. It's about the challenge of walking a long distance and of working out where you are going. And it's about what you decide to keep, what you choose to leave behind and what you rediscover along the way.

Must read
Expertly narrated, a beautiful account of two people on a spiritual journey. The path changes them both for the better. If you only read one book this year it has to be this one.

Very different to the writers other books
Different but pleasant I enjoyed the book and found the history to the trail very interesting

Itchy Feet
I really enjoyed this reading. I knew and had visited some of the places mentioned, so it had a special interest for me.
I found myself daydreaming about doing the Camino walk myself, although I couldn't walk their distance or at their pace either, but perhaps it is something for my retirement.
So my itchy feet will have to wait a while and have to settle for continuing to daydream walking into Cahors and seeing the town at the bottom of the valley again.

Brilliant feelgood journey
I loved this book at a time of feeling low, it has inspired and soothed. The characters bring you in, being so well executed in delivery.. they are real, as I see them in my minds eye and feel they exist, at least versions of them do. Living in this book whilst listening during any free time I created, made my time so enjoyable. I am so sad it has had to conclude. So now I will search for.. hopefully a follow up book...the St Francis walk book? if there is no follow up book this one has inspired and energised.. A great listen. A story of hope and inspiration on the rollarcoaster of life. No matter if your religious or just seeking sustenance.

A virtual walk of the Camino de Santiago
The central characters, American Zoe & British Martin, start walking the Camino de Santiago for different personal reasons but from the very start their paths are set to become intertwined.
For those who don't know, the Camino de Santiago is the routes followed by pilgrims from medieval times to the Spanish city of Santiago where the remains of St James rest.
This is a lovely story with chapters alternating between the viewpoints of Zoe & Martin.
I have to admit that when I first started listening I wasn't sure about the narrators but changed my mind as the story continued.
The description of the Camino routes were vivid and you actually felt you could visualise the scenes.
All in all an enjoyable listen

A long trail
I had to listen to this as Graeme Simsion was a coauthor.
I was tempted to give up the story like Martin however I chose to finish as part of my pilgrimage and also as I have had the pleasure of going to Santiago (though not by walking).
I’m not sure why they (the authors) chose an American female as an Aussie female might have been a little more amusing.

A Very Enjoyable Read
This was a long shot for me as I was not sure it would be enjoyable. However, I was wrong. The characters were engaging from the beginning and the story of the Chemin and Camino were interesting and informing. Good narration and an all round good listen. Worth a shot.
