About this listen

Set under the brooding skies of North Norfolk. Meet Sara Hirst as she searches for her lost father and finds that great beauty sometimes conceals great violence.

Detective Sara Hirst has moved from London to Norfolk Police's Serious Crimes Unit. She wants to know the truth about her father, who has connections to the area. Her mother won't tell her the real story.

A new job. A new place. Same old problems.

Sara's first call-out is to a decomposing body discovered in a ditch on a local farm. How does the murder relate to a recent spate of thefts? Who wanted the victim dead?

Then the case grows very personal....

Contains mature themes.

The story was somewhat predictable but nevertheless enjoyable it did make me gasp sometimes especially with the woman. Coming from Norfolk unfortunately the underlying racism is all too true. The reader hasn’t got some of the Norfolk dialect quite right ( some especially Agnes sounded more American) but at least it wasn’t the West Country accent which often happens.

A good listen

Deals with identity, belonging, abandonment, exploitation and crime. Strong story from start to finish, but the performance at times was a little distracting (especially the Newcastle accent).

Loved the different plots running on parallel

Enjoyed the story happy to listen until the end despite the poor narration. Terrible accents, certainly don’t reflect the areas they were supposed to come from. Do the narrators have to audition?

Good story, poor narrator

The narration is often good, BUT accents bear everywhere. Norfolk farmers who lapse in turn into American or even Scottish accents being one example. A sloppy waste.

An interesting story against the backdrop of people trafficking

Interesting storyline covering a sensitive subject. Lots of twists and turnes with an excellent ending. Very well narrated.

Had me hooked

Story good. Narration clear, but the wierd and inconsistent accents were rather annoying. Slightly 2D characters but hopefully will flesh out in subsequent books.

it is a brilliant story - well written, well plotted and gripping. I'm going to be reading the whole series! Sadly let down by the performer who, though she has a lovely voice and engaging manner, can't sustain accents or voices, meaning that the characters get confused. Do persevere though - it would be sad to miss out on a great read because of that.

Brilliant Detective Fiction

I enjoyed the story of illegal immigration’s impact on the plot and the negativity of the team to the ethnicity of the main character

Interesting intertwined content

I thought the plot and sub plots were excellent. Well laid out with all the intertwining plots fitting together very well. Excellent read

Very good story

Was looking forward to this story after my previous poor listening choice. Enjoyed the writing & the plot, but felt that the highlighting of social issues within the police force did not add anything to the story.

Shockingly poor accents
