About this listen

Katie LeClair has finally settled down as the new doctor in Baxter, Michigan. After years of moving, schooling, and training, she wants nothing more than to find a place she can call home, and a small town outside of Ann Arbor seems perfect.

Katie quickly gets to work in building a life for herself in Baxter, and beyond reviving her love life, she also finds a pair of business partners in a team of father and son family practitioners. But that idyllic dream is immediately shattered when one of her patients is found dead. That wouldn't be the worst thing, except the death is ruled a suicide, and as evidence has it, the suicide was a result of the medication Katie had prescribed. But she doesn't remember writing it.

When a closer investigation reveals it was murder, Katie is catapulted into an off-the-books investigation that leads her down a dark path of past secrets. But someone is willing to kill to keep part of the town's history in the shadows, and Katie must race to find out who before it's too late.

Very good

really enjoyed it, not as fast paced as some mystery novels but the tension builds well at the end and the narration is good

Intriguing

An easy and enjoyable listen. My first book by this author, but won't be my last. I really liked Kate (doctor and main character), as she was very down to earth. Just as medics seek to diagnose patients illnesses, so Kate worked to uncover the truth about her patients suspicious death. Did she really commit suicide, when everyone thought she was happy? But if it wasn't suicide, who on earth would want to kill her and why?

Nancy Drew for grown ups.

This was an easy listen and while not a bad story, I would recommend it more to the Murder She Wrote enthusiasts more than people who like dark, psychological thrillers or true crime. Fewer twists and turns than a Roman road, but the characters are well written and likable and the narrator did a smashing job, especially with the Michigan accents, without making them a caricature.

Interesting story

I would have liked a slightly less predictable end, it all felt a bit rushed on the last 30 minutes of the book.

A decent cosy drama with an amateur sleuth

This is a decent story about a newly-qualified doctor who ends up investigating the suspicious death of a patient, and uncovers far more than she expected in a small town where everyone knows everyone else, but not all of the secrets. She's a little slow on the uptake at times, but that adds a bit of tension. Satisfactory ending, closing this story.

I felt that the author included too much detail at times, which didn't help move the story along, and there were a few minor loose ends left dangling.

Enjoyable listen

Good story and good narrator. Had already listened to Book 2 of the series. Shame I hadn’t listened to this one first, as I did know some of the ending of this one in advance. Nonetheless, a pleasant listen, with a likeable main character.
