Summary
Soho, 1935.
Sergeant Leon Geats' Patch.
A snarling, skull-cracking misanthrope, Geats marshals the grimy rabble according to his own elastic moral code.
The narrow alleys are brimming with jazz bars, bookies, black-shirts, ponces and tarts, so when a body is found above the Windmill Club, detectives are content to dismiss the case as just another young woman who topped herself early.
But Geats - a good man prepared to be a bad one if it keeps the worst of them at bay - knows the dark seams of the city.
Working with his former partner, mercenary Flying Squad Sergeant Mark Cassar, Geats obsessively dedicates himself to finding a warped killer - a decision that will reverberate for a lifetime and transform both men in ways they could never expect.
Critic reviews
"An epic, brutal, blockbuster of a crime novel. It's the best film noir you've never seen complete with a love story that might just rip your heart out." (Trevor Wood)
"Nolan achieves that almost mythical balance of breathtakingly poetic prose and high stakes drama." (Victoria Selman)

magnificent
this is an epic story. It's a serial killer tale but it is much, much more.

Buy this book and say goodbye to a week of your life.
Majestic and epic, the book I’ve waited all my life for. It is so tightly written that you can’t miss a moment for doubt of a beat which may have a clue. Love is at its centre, but it’s not a love story. It’s a love letter to Soho and all who live, work and die there. Huge and powerful. So clever, so dark and yet done with love

Wonderful tale of soho before and after ww2
This is a truly epic saga. Involved. Black, white and grey. Moral dilemmas. Life and death. Heartbreak. Mystery. Everything you would want in a great novel.
Had not heard of either the author or narrator before but will check out both.
Dominic Nolan has written a wonderful novel. Great insights into Soho before during and after ww2. Part detective novel, part mystery, part social commentary with a wonderful conclusion.
Thought the narrator was not going to be up to the task at the start but it was as if his confidence grew once he got into the meat of the book and soon he was a positive advantage.
Thoroughly recommended. I found myself looking for opportunities to keep listening - the dog certainly got plenty of walks in over the last week or so.

An spic story, brilliantly narrated
Not my usual period or setting for crime fiction and after the first chapter I actually thought about leaving it for a while and starting on something else. However what a gripping story this turned out to be. The performance from Owen Findlay was awesome, bringing all the characters to life superbly.

Vine Street by Dominic Nolan
Utterly compelling - beautifully written and read. Made me genuinely laugh, and cry. Very highly recommended for someone with a modestly strong stomach

Imagination, pace and craft.
I found this book through a very positive review in The Times. It’s a terrific story framed across more than 50 years and a group of well-drawn colourful characters.
Highly recommended but some of the pronunciation jars horribly and brings the listener up short, and breaks the flow of the story.
For example, The ‘s’ in Grosvenor shouldn’t be pronounced. A ‘brazier’ should be pronounced with 3 syllables not two like the American pronunciation of brassiere. “Warming their hands around a hot brazier” comes out horrendously as a result. There are other examples, where words are just wrongly enunciated.
That quibble apart, I’m a big fan of the author and will look for more of his books.

Flawless
A wonderful twisting tale, beautifully written & narrated. Would love to see Geets feature in other stories, is there a retrospective series there based on his Soho years?

Brilliant whodunnit
This is a great book! You need to concentrate as there are various mini stories within but gives a good description of the times of the crimes! Excellent.

Great Read
Great story set over 4 time periods. Strong characters and story set in Soho before and after the war. Kept my interest right to the end and well narrated. A must read !
