About this listen
** Publishing in the US as WE WILL BE JAGUARS**
'I'm here to tell you my story, which is also the story of my people and the story of this forest.'
Born into the Waorani tribe of Ecuador's Amazon rainforest, Nemonte Nenquimo was taught about plant medicines, foraging, oral storytelling, and shamanism by her elders. Age 14, she left the forest for the first time to study with an evangelical missionary group in the city. Eventually, her ancestors began appearing in her dreams, pleading with her to return and embrace her own culture.
She listened.
Two decades later, Nemonte has emerged as one of the most forceful voices in climate-change activism. She has spearheaded the alliance of indigenous nations across the Upper Amazon and led her people to a landmark victory against Big Oil, protecting over a half million acres of primary rainforest. Her message is as sharp as the spears that her ancestors wielded - honed by her experiences battling loggers, miners, oil companies and missionaries.
In this astonishing memoir, she partners with her husband Mitch Anderson, founder of Amazon Frontlines, digging into generations of oral history, uprooting centuries of conquest, hacking away at racist notions of Indigenous peoples, and ultimately revealing a life story as rich, harsh and vital as the Amazon rainforest herself.
The Waorani language (referred to as Wao Tededo in the audiobook) is one of the world's most endangered languages and is only spoken by around 2,000 people. The Publishers would like to thank Oswando Nenquimo (Opi) and Connie Dickinson as well as the Endangered Languages Archive elararchive.org and the Endangered Languages Documentation Program eldp.net for their valuable support in ensuring accurate pronunciation of Waorani names and terms.

is exactly what we need to hear. Had we listened long ago to these voices we wouldn't be in the eye of the storm now. (EMMA THOMPSON, Actor and Writer)

An incredible read
This is the most generous sharing of Nemonte’s story, in a way that allows us to experience both the challenges and joys in lives that might be quite different from our own. Wonderful.

This is a book all people living in the ‘civilized’ world need to know
It is easy to destroy what we do not know. Right now, when our world is at a crossroad and we have to throw all of our resources at undoing the damage we have made, nothing short of a shift in our consciousness must take place, we must change the way we relate to the natural world and learn to respect the wisdom of first people. This book is beautifully written and beautifully read. Definitely recommend

Such an important story to read and learn from
Such a powerful, honest and heroic story. The reminder and teaching of what’s important and another way of living, I am so grateful to have read and learnt from Nemontes life and the Warani. I would definitely recommend, everyone should read this, it’s an antidote to the struggles of western culture.

Story of love and resistance that helps us fight our own ignorance
It is only when we learn about other people what we can start sympathising and accepting each other. We have some many internalised believes which limit us, one being that modernity is the only way of being. This book shows us how ideology is imposed and reinforced, but show us also how love and resistance is possible. Thank you!

These things still happen in the 2000s.
Please read this book. It's an incredibly important insight and revelation - even for those who think they are enlightened by understanding the depth of the damage we do to our environment. Even for those who think they know change is needed and who make small adjustments in our lives to help. Here is the true context of those small "sacrifices" that we think we make. Towards the end of part 1 (halfway through chapter 11), I was faltering, it's a tough life story to read. It would have been harder to live it. Yet, by skipping to the co-author's footnote, I had the privilege of hope that part 2 would be easier to swallow. Please read this book 🙏
