About this listen

Hillsborough, North Carolina is a town with a dark history, one that was hidden until investigative journalist Laura Chambers pulled it into the light.

Nearly a year has passed since her deadly encounter with a serial killer’s twisted progeny, a brutal confrontation that left her physically and emotionally scarred. She’s ready to put the past behind her, but the past has other plans. A woman runs onto the interstate, directly into the path of a truck, and the gruesome accident leaves behind a mangled corpse. Her very last phone call was to Laura, but the victim was barefoot, in a state of undress, and her face is disfigured beyond recognition. Identification seems impossible, and the only thing in her possession is an old photograph depicting Laura, her father—and standing next to them—her imaginary friend from childhood. What else is mistaken about her memories?

Laura’s father passed away when she was eight, and she thought she understood why he vanished from her life the year before he died, but the photograph casts doubt on everything she thought she knew. Soon Laura is digging into the history of the deceased, and her own family, determined to discover what lies beneath...

Story has Depth, Suspense, Intrigue and well Read

As I listen I am transferred into a small town, surrounded with fields of corn. Where the people have a ‘chip on their shoulder’, aggressive to outsiders. The story starts with a young woman killed on the interstate highway. As the police try and find the identity of the woman by calling her last phone number……., I can guarantee that any spare minutes you will be listening to this well written story.

Story kept you engaged-fab

I wondered where this book would go but my doubts were absolutely smashed with a believable story with multiple little surprises and twists which added to the intrigue and whilst some things sprang out and made you doubt your feelings about some characters others made your loathing of them justified. Look forward to the next instalment!

Great follow up, excellent story telling

Laura the main character is flawed and selfish but she’s growing on me! I love crime thrillers and in a crowded genre, I like that the crime being investigated is seen from a journalist’s perspective. Good plot, lots of layers to it; and the characters have developed nicely in this second instalment. More please.
