About this listen

“A brilliant, breathless thriller that kept me guessing to the last shocking page.” - Erin Kelly, Sunday Times bestselling author of He Said/She Said

An Amazon Charts and Washington Post bestseller.

It was supposed to be the perfect reunion: six university friends together again after twenty years. Host Ali finally has the life she always wanted, a career she can be proud of and a wonderful family with her college boyfriend, now husband. But that night her best friend makes an accusation so shocking that nothing will ever be the same again.

When Karen staggers in from the garden, bleeding and traumatised, she claims that she has been assaulted - by Ali’s husband, Mike. Ali must make a split-second decision: who should she believe? Her horrified husband, or her best friend? With Mike offering a very different version of events, Ali knows one of them is lying - but which? And why?

When the ensuing chaos forces her to re-examine the golden era the group shared at university, Ali realises there are darker memories too. Memories that have lain dormant for decades. Memories someone would kill to protect.

brilliant

I could not put this book down, it was a very good story line, with believable characters and situations! I didn't see the ending coming! I would strongly recommend this book for anyone who loves to get to the end of a story to find out who really done the crime!! the narrator was also brilliant and go into the feel of everything, well done.

It was ok

Storyline was ok but I've listened to other books by this author that were better . I'm not sure who choose the narrator? I havent searched her up but sounds like an older lady in her 70's casting a 42 year old woman . I wanted to like this but 3* from me .

Interesting story but awful main character

I really enjoyed Clare McGowan’s other books but this one wasn’t as good as the others, possibly because the main character is very unlikable. She is so selfish it’s borderline narcissistic. Add to this her superficial obsession with brands and material things. I couldn’t root for her. There’s no depth to her, all her thoughts revolve around herself or how she could manipulate situations to her benefit. I just kept wishing she’d get done for obstruction of justice.
The narration was good in my opinion I like Karen Cass very much. I think she is a better narrator than Pearl Hewitt. Pearl’s way of reading just makes the character sound even more unlikable with adopting some kind of childish whiny voice for her.

Somewhat Predictable

I was hoping this would be a book of unexpected discovery, a few twists and turns but sadly after the first few chapters it became more and more predictable. Only one character held any real hidden depth, Jodie. But the 'culprit' was quite obvious based on the evidence in the those first chapters. Still worth the read.

Good story not sure about narrator but...

Maybe the narrator was right for the lead character who isn't particularly likeable but maybe that's the consequence of narration.
Aside from that this is a gripping tale which you have to complete.
Highly recommend

Mavis

This book was most enjoyable, however the narrator sounds like Les Dennis doing his Mavis from Coronation Street impersonation, ‘I don’t really know.’ That is all. Next.

Glad I ignored the reviews

I don't usually buy a book if the reviews are poor and the narrator isn't well received. But for some reason I got this book because I liked other books by the same author.
Yrs, the narrators voice was a little irritating but the story pulled me along and the clever twists and turns kept me guessing and regressing throughout.
Beautifully concluded too!

Couldn't get along with the narrator

I purchased this audiobook and got a few chapters in before I also discovered it on Kindle Unlimited. I ended up reading most of it instead of listening because I just found the narration so grating - it brought a completely different inflection to the story than the one I had in my head when reading. I think it's a personal taste matter, but I truly could not get along with the narration at all it just completely took me out of the story. I read it in a couple of days, and certainly enjoyed it. I ended up checking out another couple of Claire McGowan titles on KU and have enjoyed reading them too, so I would recommend as a lazy afternoon read - but if you have Kindle Unlimited just read it there, the narration adds nothing (actually imo subtracts) from the experience and there are better audiobooks to spend your credits on :).
