About this listen

Decent Fellows Press presents Where Death Meets the Devil, book one in the stunning, original Death and the Devil M/M thriller series.

Jack Reardon, former SAS soldier and current Australian Meta-State asset, has seen some messy battles. But messy takes on a whole new meaning when he finds himself tied to a chair in a torture shack, his cover blown wide open, all thanks to notorious killer-for-hire Ethan Blade.

Blade is everything Jack doesn't believe in: remorseless, detached, lawless. Yet, Jack's only chance to survive is to strike a bargain with the devil and join forces with Blade. As they trek across a hostile desert, Jack learns that Blade is much more than a dead-eyed killer, and harder to resist than he should be.

A year later, Jack is home and finally getting his life on track. Then Ethan Blade reappears and throws it all into chaos once more. It's impossible to trust the assassin, especially when his presence casts doubts on Jack's loyalty to his country, but Jack cannot ignore what Blade's return means: The mess that brought them together is far from over, and Ethan might just bring back the piece of Jack's soul he thought he'd lost forever.

🌏 Colour Me Intrigued!!

Jack and Ethan know who they are, what they are doing and they are grown. There is no time for histrionics; there are no tick-the-boxes relationship development; high angst is absent; and blessedly, when the two reach a tentative understanding, there is no stroppy language, contrivances, or orchestrated peril for one MC.

💫 Jack is mixed race and the author weaves in his ethnicity in his POV. Ethan has a biological flaw woven into the narrative. The author’s conceit is advanced technology and though I only really notice it with Jack, what she has created is inventive. This book is set in Australia and the cities, outback and wildlife have their moments - look out for Sheila! I adore the considered character work, intelligent writing and imaginative plotting. I also forgive Jack | Ethan for having the same names as Tal Bauer's protagonists (Executive Office Series). As a die-hard fan of ‘James Bond’ type spying, action, adventure, and seducing, I am happy with WDMTD!

🎧 Rowan Scott’s Australian accent is lovely and he made it easy on the ear. However, his range is limited. Female characters are indistinct to men. Also, as all characters and story beats get the same lively delivery, there is little nuance in dialogue or emotional beats. 🎭 A more skilled hand would have done more with the writing, emotion, tension, villains and especially with Ethan. Be that as it may, his performance here is enjoyable so do press on Mr. Scott!

Great

I don’t know how I hadn’t heard of this series sooner as it’s my type of book.
Jack and Ethan were great the banter between them made me laugh at times and the twists and turns kept me sat on the edge of my chair anticipating what was coming.

Fantastic, gritty thriller with superb narration

It's so refreshing to hear a native Aussie narrator, and Rowan Scott does a super job with "Where Death Meets the Devil". The writing is brilliant, original, and there are lots of twists and turns in the story to keep the listener on their toes. I loved that this story doesn't follow the same old tired tropes that litter M/M titles, I enjoyed the past/present structure of the chapters as it kept the suspense rate high and it enabled the author to reveal information in an exciting way. I was hooked.
Jack and Ethan are a couple who should not be, by their lifestyles they should both be dead. But together they make a stellar team and smokin' hot lovers. I understand the whole series is going to be on audio...all I can say is "shut up and take my money"

amazing start of a series

This is so my type of book
I loved everything: the MCs, the plot, the twists
(so many!), and the ending, but what I loved the
most was not knowing what was true and what
wasn't about the MCs. They were both mysterious especially Ethan, and since this is told from Jack's POV, we are entirely in the dark about Ethan. This made the reading more interesting for me.
The ending was great, it had action and mystery until the last pages, and the last sentence made me want to jump straight ahead to book 2, which l'll obviously do after I read the novellas that come in between.

The audio is a piece of art with an amazing narrator.

Just do it !

Good Aussie narrator for a adventure mission set partly in Aus. Such a pleasant surprize to find a well written, well set tale containing tech, techspeak and tactics, as well as drama and heartsearching heartpounding heroics. Good clever dialogue, humour and banter abound making me look forward to the next book in this series.

The MM romance is not shoved in your face; it is drizzled in slow natural increments, like dangerous animals mating in nature, a secondary journey for both MCs and not just a mission.

SUCH AN ENTERTAINING SURPRIZE

Great start to a series

What a great start to a series, loads of action, suspense. and I love the relationship that is growing between the main characters. I'm liking the main characters, Jack and Ethan, I have a soft spot for Ethan, The author L J Hayward is new to me and Rowan Scott is an excellent narrator, I love his voices for Ethan and Jack, plus supporting characters. Can't wait to listen to book two.
