Summary

You can give up killing, but death never leaves you....

After a lifetime of hunting down criminals, Ryan just wants to live out his days in peace and in the shadows of Tokyo to grieve the loss of his wife and son. But his old team - the Nameless, experts in extraction and recon - comes with an urgent request for help. The young daughter of one of his closest friends, a girl he once treated as his own, has been kidnapped.

The search leads Ryan and his team into the Japanese mountains and a town steeped in secrets that a new sinister adversary wishes to keep hidden. I've been waiting over twenty years for this

The premise of the story is one I came across many years ago and have been waiting for again and for the most part it has not disappointed. A really great listen (or read if you have the book) with an exciting storyline with an international setting. So nice to get away from 'everything happens in america' stories, though the states still is still a significant part of the story line, and Heroes who are not all star spangled and flag waving. There are a multitude of interesting and engaging characters, heroes and villains, a storyline that gets you hooked fast and keeps you guessing as to what is coming next with plot line twists that make you sit up and take notice. Good dialogue between the character's and plenty of action to get your teeth into as they say. I've already formed solid opinions on who needs to die in book two and that's always a good sign that the author has you and that you are invested in the conclusion. Don't let me down... So why only 4 stars? The main reason for this is that whilst the basis premise is a personal favourite subject of mine, the way in which it has come about went beyond the limits that my imagination would allow as plausible. Now, it's fiction, it's not meant to be realistic and I am not looking for that, but when I ask myself, could this happen? I tell myself yes, but not in this way. It's just a little niggle that sometimes has me grimace. Another reason is that I feel the author missed a trick. This subject has the potential to scare the lunch out of you, and I would have preferred it if it had. A book that makes you lie awake at night thinking about the 'what if's ' is an excellent book, but for me the true horror of this technology has not been realised. That said, I really enjoyed it and there are enough plausible what if's in there to have me thinking about the book when I'm not actively listening to it and I am definitely hooked for book two.
