About this listen

1985, Cambridgeshire. An MPs wife is involved in a fatal car crash, and may be over the alcohol limit. Ben Schroeder QC returns to defend her but nothing is straightforward as he gets tangled in a web of political ambition and intrigue.

A compulsive mix of crime fiction and legal thriller, exploring highly topical themes.

I’ve binge-listened to the Ben Schroeder series with a lot of enjoyment. This book was also great - well written with good twists and changes of pace. All previous books have been great and deserved five stars. Sadly this was the only four-star book in the series.

A central premise in this story just didn’t work for me. I work in a Neurology Dept and even in “miraculous recoveries”, people don’t just “wake up” from coma with all faculties intact. Coma is not just a prolonged sleep.

Until “Passage of Time” I’d been impressed by the author’s background research. For example, he knows/knew Cambridge and Bloomsbury very well - and I’ve walked the streets and enjoyed a glass or two of refreshment in the various pubs and Hotels he describes. With Passage of Time, a little more research (and maybe some back-reference to work he’s already covered on false memory or confabulation) would have made this a much stronger piece.

Nevertheless, it’s an enjoyable book - maybe we’ve reached finale of the series? A shame if Ben is departing with a whimper rather than a bang.
