Eve is a captive of the Party. Adam, having fled the Citadel with others, finds himself beyond the Frontier in an underground world where nothing is as he expected it to be. Nathaniel and his soldiers sweep the city clean of the Resistance, who are busy limiting the damage their exposure has caused. Starting fresh, they lick their wounds and mourn their losses. Eve is shown an alternative version of their history, but attempts to turn her against her own people meet with unexpected obstacles.

A lull in the onslaught of infected breeds a false sense of security for Johnson and his expanded group. Once again, events unfolding far beyond their knowledge conspire to bring a new type of terror to the survivors. Others, displaced from what had been their place of safety, struggle to survive against age-old enemies: cold and hunger. In a bold move, they break out, only to make unexpected discoveries which could spell a chance for them to survive.

Struggling for supplies and battling the elements, the true nature of people shows through as they face adversity like they have never known before. Nevin, as charmed and untouchable as his toxic existence has been, finds a niche in his new home; still not enough for him, though, as he plans to become more comfortable at the expense of others. But is tangling with Johnson a confrontation he can come back from?

The Hive is gone, but the queen’s effect on the world lingers. As the people of Tranquility rebuild, those touched by the alien creature struggle to come to grips with what was done to them and the pain they’d caused to their friends and family. Joel Lander is no stranger to their hardships, but with a new threat looming, they have precious little time to lose. The fight for Tranquility is not over.
