Sled dog Athos and feisty kitten Pearl travel with their human to the beautiful island of Sylt to meet a famous animal psychologist. There, they must take on not only a chatty bird and bad-tempered horses, but also a two-legged with murderous plans. Soon the furry detectives have their paws full with protecting their human and her host and hunting down a very dangerous killer.

Victoria Adler's plunge into midlife proves to be quite the rollercoaster. As a successful psychotherapist, she expected stability, but life had other plans. Athos, Pearl and their two-leggeds are guests at a beautiful palais in Vienna, Austria. A grand ball is to be held there to celebrate the eighteenth birthday of the family's daughter, and recently Bella, a young Malamute just like Athos, has also moved into the grand historic mansion. But instead of fun and games with the puppy and a glittering night at the ball, a murder takes place—for which Victoria Adler, the Master Sleuths' very own human, is arrested!

Professor Adler, distinguished historian and Athos's former owner, had died in a tragic accident. At least, that has been the official story until now. But a former employee of the professor's is very insistently interested in his estate-and suddenly dies himself under suspicious circumstances. Does the gardener of the neighboring property, seemingly a very friendly two-legged, have both men on his conscience? Athos's and Pearl's sleuthing instincts are called for, because the police may be on the wrong trail . . .
