Ash Rashid is a former homicide detective who can't stand the thought of handling another death investigation. That's until his niece's body is found in the property of one of the city's wealthiest citizens. The coroner calls it an overdose, but the case doesn't add up. Against orders, Ash launches an investigation to find his niece's murderer.

Detective Mary Joe Court sleeps with a shotgun beside her bed and a lovable bull mastiff at her feet. For the past 12 years, she’s hidden from a nightmarish past, but with every passing day, her scars fade, and her heart grows lighter. At the end of a particularly gruelling summer day, Ash Rashid is heading home to his wife and kids when he discovers a pair of bodies, shot execution style, in the front seat of a crashed vehicle. As the first officer on the scene, Ash finds himself and his department 20 minutes behind a killer in a race where every second counts. With two victims down and a third unaccounted for, the clock is ticking, and Ash must find the killer before he strikes again.

A volunteer found the body while searching the Missouri backwoods for a pair of missing teenagers. The victim was murdered and dumped at a camp site deep in the woods. It’s tornado season in central Missouri. The air is still. The sky is dark green. There’s a wall cloud to the west. A nasty storm is coming…Detective Joe Court knows her team shouldn’t be out there, but they need to collect the evidence before it’s destroyed.

So the last thing he wants to get involved in is a fresh murder investigation. But when Ash hears that the mother of his daughter's best friend has been killed in a brutal hit and run he steps in to help.

The victim has chemical burns on her arms, two broken legs and a deep gash on her throat. Then three more bodies are found. Each victim testified in a murder trial 10 years ago, one that launched Ash's career. Each of them helped put a dangerous man in prison, and now each has paid the price.
