1935! The winds of war have begun to fan the flames of conflict across the Pacific. As Nick Grant tries to support his mother and sister during the depression, he's swept into a deadly contest between spies struggling to control the Pacific Ocean.

Pharmacy student Jason Rodgers craves a coveted externship at one of the most prestigious sites in all of Virginia. He sits in his beat-up Honda contemplating how his future will change if he can impress the demanding preceptor and land one of the few slots. His interview with Thomas Pettigrew, The Colonial Pharmacy's owner, and the woman he meets there will, in fact, change his future in ways Rodgers never envisioned.

It is a time of intrigue and adventure. Nick Grant is a young man living in California with big dreams and a feisty girlfriend. He wants to become a Pan American Airways pilot. The Navy’s Aviation Cadet program helps, and he also works part time at Pan Am learning the ropes. Nick helped build the Pacific Bases that support the China Clipper airline route. With quick thinking and luck, he thwarted a Japanese sabotage effort led by Toshio Miyazaki.

After a five-month adventure building the Pan American Airways Pacific island bases, 17-year-old Nick Grant returns to Alameda High School. But Nick has changed, and is having trouble re-adjusting to his previous life. His part-time job at the Pan American hangar is his only respite, but then, a series of mysterious ‘accidents’ occur, casting doubt on him and his mentor.

In February 1936–Nick’s old nemeses, Black Dragon Toshio Miyazaki of Japanese Naval Intelligence returns to San Francisco. He enlists a traitor to steal top-secret US Naval Codes. Nick joins a naval intelligence team with a mad plan. They would race Miyazaki to China in a new Sikorsky S-43 amphibian and confront Miyazaki using Nick as bait. Then United States Marines would spring a trap and recover the stolen codes. All Nick has to do is survive the encounter with the merciless Black Dragon.

After their last run in, Nick Grant believes his nemesis, Black Dragon Toshio Miyazaki, is dead. Determined to leave espionage behind, Nick starts a new life as a Naval Aviation Cadet. During training, famous aviator and movie producer, Howard Hughes, lures Midshipman Nick into a mock dogfight. Hughes is impressed with Nick’s skill and offers to hire him. Nick’s college dreams stand in the way, and he politely turns Hughes down. However, their paths cross again as they struggle to retrieve stolen American technology .
