Elvira und ihr Gatte, der Rittmeister, leben auf ihrem Schloss, als der Vagant Pelegrin auftaucht. Die drei hatten sich vor 17 Jahren in Santa Cruz kennengelernt. Der Rittmeister wollte mit dem damaligen Matrosen Pelegrin nach Hawaii segeln. Die Tochter Viola entstammt der damaligen Liebe zwischen Pelegrin und Elvira. Pelegrin wird nun für den Rittmeister und seine Frau zu einer Erinnerung an ungelebtes Leben. Der Rittmeister bricht nach Hawaii auf, um noch einmal zu leben.
