I like the era and subject and the author has written in the style of the day in similar fashion to Patrick O’Brien.

I will admit it has a slow start, but by the time of the battle itself, it has found its way. Not that its the smoke and the thunder of war that saves it, but the relationships. Both with senior officers and various women back home. By the end of the book you can't wait for the next one!

Having listened to all of the Aubrey/Maturin series several times, this book took a bit of getting used to. The details are as bold and the accuracy as great.

I think the reader certainly grew into his role as the story progressed and he has a great ear for regional and national accents. Looking forward to the second book...

The book is an excellent read. I'm looking forward to reading more about the characters and the period. This book by necessity sets the story off as per other books of this genre.

As a fan of historical fiction I have enjoyed this book very much. in the 70s as a school boy, I first read c s Foersters hornblower books and find this in that vein. in latter yrs the books of Cornwall and scarrow among others have been my favourites, and the difference between them is one of rank. the writings contrast language of the street and that of an officer class which at the time of king george felt themselves superior.

I loved the detail, some might find it slowed paced or too over detailed but for me I really enjoyed this. His wife input about horsemanship made it far superior to many such reads. Can’t wait for the next one…
