About this listen
Since its formation in 1861, Italy has struggled to develop an effective political system and a secure sense of national identity. Christopher Duggan's acclaimed introduction charts the country's history from the fall of the Roman Empire in the West to the present day, and surveys the difficulties Italy has faced during the last two centuries in creating a unified country. Duggan successfully weaves together political, economic, social and cultural history, and stresses the alternation between materialist and idealist programs for forging a nation-state. The audiobook includes coverage of 19th- and 20th-century Italy, as well as a section devoted to Italy in the 21st century. This is the ideal resource for those seeking an authoritative and comprehensive introduction to Italian history.

Now I know Italian history because of this book.
Concise history of italy is sort of audiobook i was looking for over the past few years. Since I'm interested in italian history and its Unification process. This book somehow summarized for me the complete history of italy in a wonderful and informative way.

A fascinating insight into Italy
I thoroughly enjoyed both the material and the performance. I will need to re listen in the future as it covers a wide range of social, economic & political issues.

Great book
A critical but fair account of the complex Italian modern and contemporary history. It is worth hearing.

A wonderful sweep of a fascinating land.
I found this book extremely well paced, objective and at times witty. I have tried a number of books on Italy and found my progress to be unsatisfactory. This work definitely gave me insights and I found myself up to the pace at all times.

I learned a lot about Italian history
Interesting and concise history of Italy. If it hadn't been for Jonathan Keeble who's an excellent performer of audiobook, I wouldn't have made it to the end. I would have appreciated a more modern approach including some storytelling and found it a bit boring at times. Another point that if revised the audiobook would benefit from is that the word "however" recurs with excessive frequency. Felt to me as thousand times at least and was a bit tiring to the end.

Factual and thorough but lacking narrative.
My personal taste with history books is for more narrative led titles, Schama for example who brings the history alive and teases out meaning from events.
This book favours more a chronicle of events style, interesting but felt flat.
It does cover a huge amount however and I've learnt a lot.

Interesting and educational political history
A well presented history of Italy from a political perspective, right up to near current times.

Very good but a little dry
This is clearly a very well-researched and serious political history of Italy, and I mostly enjoyed it but did find it a little dry in places. Very well-read by Jonathan Keeble.

Italian speaker
The reader obviously does not know the first thing about the the Italian language or its pronunciation. This is extremely offputting. Imagine an audiobook on the USA where the reader talks about Nev York and Floreeda.
