About this listen

Terry McCaleb's enforced quiet lifestyle on the island of Catalina is a far cry from the hectic excitement of his former role as an FBI profiler. However when small-time criminal Edward Gunn is found dead, McCaleb becomes embroiled in a disturbing and complex case leading him to cross the path of Harry Bosch.

This infamous detective has always teetered on the brink of darkness in order to get inside the head of the killer. Is it possible he has stepped across that finely drawn line and embraced darkness?

Another great Bosch/McCaleb thriller

Slightly different than the normal Bosch book as he is shared with McCaleb too. The narrator could have been better doing Bosch, but then Dick Hill is a tough act to follow. I thoroughly recommend this title

Great Storylines

Loads of twists and turns but Bosch gets there everytime but not necessarily the way You would expect Him to...Or would You. !

Not much Bosch

Overall the story is good however done in a very different format to the previous Bosch novels. the reason for that is Bosch is not the primary charachter but an Ex FBI profiler called Terry McCaleb. My understating is there is a stand alone novel written by Michael Connelly on this charchter before the events in this book. I haven't read or listened to that book but it didn't take away from the charchter here in any major ways. If anything it lacks in depth details of the charachter but it does not ruin this plot line.

Harry really does not come into the novel until very late on and its only ever in court for the case he is part of prosecuting. I feel that a great opportunity was missed here to see this story unravel from Harry's perspective as it could of given us some access to some great psychological insights into his charchter.

The one thing I really didn't like was the voice of Harry. After Dick Hill for the first five (who was brilliant) and then the slight odd transition to Peter Giles (A little too movie voice over for me), the narrator here just really falls short. The rest of the charachters are done well but for some reason Harry sounds 30 years older than he should and like some sort of cowboy!!!

The story is slow to get into but the final 10 chapters are very good and being together some great plot lines.

Great Story

Bosch is by far my favourite character. Using the talent of the artist he is named for was a stroke of genius. I’ve seen some of the original artwork. It stands alone in its originality and gruesome subject matter.

The story was great started off bit slow but otherwise great story.
taken me a little time to get use to Terry McCaleb as he shares the book with Bosch and as is McCaleb second book iv not read his first, but after this great story i will.
Only Negative for me was the Narrator and when he was Narrating Bosch.

Brilliant

This is a truly brilliant story with many levels, it shows a deeper insight into the mind of Bosch. You have to decide if you like what you see, good must triumph over evil, but at what cost?
Narration is is great, it must be very difficult to follow the gifted Titus and the brilliant DH but RMD gives an excellent and believable characterisation

Not as good as the usual Bosch books

I was conscious of a different narrator and I didn’t enjoy the book as much because of the narrator. The story was not as good as previous books listened too.

Just a great read/listen

My seventh Bosch and just as enjoyable as the first.
This book sees a switch in story telling from Bosch’s perspective to a retired FBI profiler who wrongly puts Bosch in the frame. When he’s pushed aside by the investigators, Bosch tells him he’s flat out wrong and puts him on the case to clear him. Another hit.
